The clicking is the drive read/write head hitting something in the drive. Most likely dead. If there's anything really important you might be able to use something like spinrite to bring it back long enough to retrieve some data, otherwise it's best to replace it. Maybe with any ssd?

If you were like me, I pulled apart the hard drive and just moved the needle a little bit to see if it was stuck in a position it shouldn’t be.

Thankfully the needle didn’t scratch anything, and I just had to reset its position, but if it has impacted against the platter, you will need to replace it.

  • 2 weeks later...

What do you want to use the flash drive for?

It will hold data, its gonna be slow(depends on drive), and windows can't run from it(windows 2 go does support it, but needs enterprise windows)

A ssd would be a much better option.

Well now you can't RMA it because you voided the warranty.

If it was making a clicking noise, it was likely because it's doing the click of death. But since you opened it up, it's likely ruined anyway. Not because the warranty is voided but because the presence of even the tiniest of dust that sticks onto the platter will cause the head to hit it and crash.

So your only option now is to junk it and buy a new one.
