Would a low end graphics card help me?

rif

I have a server that's running Ubuntu and headless.  I use NoMachine (possibly vnc in the future) to remotely access it graphically on my tablet.

But it's really slow, an incredible lag between action and response, think seconds between click and action.  When when closing windows, I can actually see it ramp the transparency until the window closes.  I'm surprised because it wasn't like this at all on my previous server, a low end atom based.

Would a graphics card help this type of situation?  The mqchine is not doing anything, all 4 cpu cores are usually 0% (xeon cpu).  The Xeon cpu does have graphics built in, maybe its worse than I thought?

I'm posting here since the graphics forum seems geared to the high end.

Other details

Dell T30, Xeon 1225v5, 32gig ddr4, ssd for boot and OS, wired Ethernet, Ubuntu 16.04.

I would say adding a GPU isn't going to help. Remote accessing anything isn't going to result in butter smooth animations and etc.

All comes down to network. Most of the time, even with the best remote access programs, unless it's over LAN, are going to display some sort of delay. Smoothness, is not something that is going to be easily accomplished with remote access in any case.

Got it.  But it was sooo much better with the atom cpu machine vs. the xeon one.  It's not even a smoothness issue; it's pretty much completely unusable.

Same network, they're  plugged into the same switch. Same OS version. Everything about the xeon machine is superior.  The only thing I could think of was the CPUs built in graphics processor, which I don't know enough to evaluate.

That server has a GPU built into the motherboard. It's typically a Matrox G200h/eh type of affair. Ubuntu might not have built-in drivers for it, so you'd have to check.

I didn't see anything in the specs about a GPU on the motherboard.  The CPU has Intel hd graphics P530.  I'll keep digging, maybe there's something in the bios.

I bought a really inexpensive graphics card (a gt710 by msi for $35) and that seems to have fixed it.  I don't quite understand why, but for the time it's saved me, totally worth it.
