Why would I want to run windows 10 over windows 7?

Only you can answer that. Different people will have different reasons to choose one OS or another.

If what you are looking for is a universal reason for which no one should use Windows 7, at this point there isn't any.

Windows 7 wasn't that great and basically the modern equivalent to people who still cling to XP.

Wasn't that great? I disagree for the sheer fact that it was so widely loved, it was stable, it looked better than Vista, etc. It's also far faster than Windows 10. OP: if you want Windows 7 and have a compatible CPU, go for it.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

A dog turd was better than Vista, not really the best to compare to lol.

Win7 now is what WinXp was before it. Would rather switch to console gaming than go back to Win7.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, Win7 was great for it's time and I used to refuse to go to 8/10. I just prefer an OS that isn't an outdated time bomb for security holes is all.

Missed the faster part, maybe on junk installs on a platter drive. I don't have any speed issues in 10.

I guess more context would be helpful here. I am currently running win 10 but there is so much fat in the os it is driving me crazy. I strongly resent how many things are built into win 10 that I cant control (ms edge and other apps, as well as the whole telemetry thing). I would like to go full on Linux but the compatibility issues there are a bear to deal with (my rig is not really beefy enough to run EVERYTHING in a virtualized  windows environment)

So with that in mind, I am specifically wondering about the differences between 7 and 10. Native support for USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, Etc. is an excellent point.

Are there any support or compatibility issues with windows 7 nowa-days? Why would I want to run windows 10 over windows 7?

It's up to you. I mean the feature list of what is new is massive as you have Windows 10 features + Windows 8 ones.

I guess if you want, "what is really big", but then we all value things differently. Like I can say: "Remote desktop has GPU acceleration", you might care.. but I highly care, in fact, it is a selling point for me (it's a Win8 feature). So it is hard to tell. but if you insist:

  • Full UEFI support
  • SecureBoot
  • Native USB 3.0 support
  • Windows Subsystem for Linux (run Linux/Unix WITH Windows. No emulation, no VM. Natively runs Linux/Unix)
  • UWP apps gets you to enjoy nice apps like Netflix, To-Do, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Hulu, Amazon Music, and more
  • DirectX 12
  • Much improved display scaling (high-DPI)
  • Much improved touch and pen support
  • Much improved file collision and transfer handling (more details on comparison of files to override them or not, does them at the end or beginning of the file transfer, not in the middle, so yuo can leave the system unattended while a transfer takes place, pause/resume file transfer, and more)
  • Auto switch between Wireless and Ethernet smoothly
  • Dobly Atmos support (codec needs to be purchased)
  • Phone integration  (growing each version of Windows 10, especially if you have an Android phone)
  • Microsoft Precision Touchpad drivers for a massively better touchpad experience (MS had enougth with crap, and decided to make their own drivers, integrated to the OS. However you do need a support touchpad as it needs high speced out touchpad. The drivers will be auto installed if supported. No you can't force it, you can try, but the touchpad won't work at all)
  • Full support the last gen CPUs
  • Virtual Desktop
  • OneDrive integration
  • Settings sync between your Windows 8/10 PCs
  • Improved Windows Defender with more security features (MS Security Essentials is now called Windows Defender and built-in since Win8. Not to be confused with the old Windows Defender)
  • FLAC, MKV, and many more media format support natively.
  • Submit feedback and up vote features suggestions and bugs via the Feedback Hub to have MS prioritize
  • New Task Manager with GPU usage per applications views
  • Aero-Snap (Side by-side window snapping) now can scale both windows.
  • 4-by-4 window snap suport
  • Improved multi-monitor support including individual monitor display scaling settings
  • Start Menu Live Tiles (see notifications content at a glance, without the need to open the app)
  • Game Bar for in game screenshot, video record, and broadcast.

and much much much more, this is just a fraction, I tried to take some items that comes to mind at random locations.

Personally, I don't see half the issues with 10 that people have had. I've not had any problems even when I upgraded from 7/8 on my older computers. Perhaps I just got lucky, but my experience with 10 or upgrading to 10 has not been a negative one.

Your concerns about bloat are valid, but windows 7 had plenty of bloat as well. My guess is they force Edge/etc to be installed, partially, because they don't want a repeat of the horrible incidents of people uninstalling Internet Explorer and having the OS lose its mind. The other reason should be obvious, but I'm gonna be honest, Edge is head-over-heels better than IE ever was. It's not as good as FF/Quantum or Chrome, but hey. The telemetry thing is concerning but they've made it better as time has gone on. I know that some people don't want to be monitored at all, which I find funny when they post it on facebook or twitter...

Another thing is it's very unlikely that future processors will continue to support Windows 7 whatsoever (already they've dropped official support, but they still "work"). You will be limiting your ability to upgrade by sticking with 7 as tech marches on.
