Tantalums tend to be violent when abused, that has nothing to do with being cheap, just the nature of that particular capacitor type. Each type of capacitor (electrolyte, tantalum, ceramic,...) has it's pro's and con's and the optimal type to use depends on the application.

Tantalums are known for exploding violently. They're quite fun.

 

But yeah always check polarity!
