Ryzen 1700 or I7700k

So I'm planning on upgrading my computer by June to July, Right now I have a I5 6600k and either way if I want a new CPU I will need another motherboard but I honestly don't know what to choose between the i7700k and the ryzen 1700. I barely know anything about the 1700 honestly the only reason I'm considering the 1700 is because two of my friends have switched over and are more happy with ryzen than intel.

You should asking 8600K or Ryzen 7 2700, since it's July. But then in August there's Cannonlake.

8600K then, or if you can wait the 9600K/9700K.

If you get a 7700k you don't need a new mobo.

Do you even need an upgrade? If not just wait.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Do this:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Or this:

@DocSwag

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

7700k is the same CPU + hyperthreading, not much of an upgrade.

R7 1700 is double the core count + "hyperthreading".

R1700 may be a bit slower per core but the additional cores make up for that if you tend to multitask.

I understand the desire to upgrade the 6600k, with all the new releases it's starting to feel a bit dated. Even though it still performs quite nicely, I've got a 6600k and I play on a 1440p monitor, unless you're looking to play at 4k resolutions you don't need to upgrade the cpu. If you're want to drop money on computer components, because it is fun to upgrade, I'd suggest a new monitor paired with a better gpu. However if you're set on upgrading specifically the CPU AMD's own graphic says it all http://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-7-1700 Intel CPU's are still king when it comes to gaming. And unless you are doing a lot of significant work in the background, ie video encoding, streaming etc, you won't be able to notice a difference in the multitasking experience. Also you won't HAVE to buy a new mobo if you go with an i7 7700k as long as you check that your current mobo has a bios that supports it.

4K reduces the need for a faster CPU, it does not increase it.  1080p is more CPU demanding because the GPU has less work to do.
