EPYC almost runs on X399

Trust me, you would know if I were trolling you.

The definition of clickbait.

"something (such as a headline) designed to make readers want to click on a hyperlink especially when the link leads to content of dubious value or interest"

So, when an article has in the title.

"Hurr durr AMD EPYC Successfully Gets Working on a Ryzen Threadripper Motherboard After Small Modifications"

When it's not working (I mean for fucks sake, it's not even POSTing).  Then the article is being misleading.

It's making it sound more exciting then it actually is, and thus, may lead to more clicks then if it's title was more truthful.

SOOOOOOOOOOOO you are just going to attack me directly for something you don't fucking like? ALLL cause you think it's "clickbait" Mr. "Hurr durr"? And NO ONE SAID IT WAS SUCCESSFULLY WORKING!!!!! Jesus FUCKING CHRIST MAN!!!!

Calm down, Mr. Sensitivity.  Calling it a clickbait article isn't an attack, it's a criticism.

You may not have, but the original WCCFTech article did. Not blaming you for that, just pointing it out.

It's right at the top of the page on the WFFCTech site.

If you felt the need to quote that at me, then you apparently misunderstood what I've been saying all along.  I'd suggest re-reading the conversation progression.

So, you accuse me of trolling, yet i'm the one who is attacking you?

I criticized the article's title, none of this is relevant to you.

Or are you the writer of the article?

ALLL cause you think it's "clickbait" Mr. "Hurr durr"?

The article's title falls in the clickbait definition, whether you like it or not.

HOLY SHIT!

IT'S IN THE TITLE OF THE ARTICLE!

I FUCKING QUOTED IT!  Minus the "hurr durr" that seemed to bother you so much.

@BluJay614 Did you read the article that you linked?

Also, @Jito463's quote is irrelevant.  Legit news and clickbait are two different things.

Thread's title is clickbait too.

There was no almost work. It didn't work, simple as that.

the epyc cpu stopped at memory training while using non ecc ram, thats normal.

seems to me that part of the problem is that we have different definitions of almost, to me going that far into the boot process is enough to be said that it almost worked, maybe to you it isnt.

Except, the issue isn't known. It's hypothesis that it's RAM, but the end result is the same. It didn't work.

Does anyone think that AMD will actually allow EPYC to run on x399 boards? Why or why not?

BTW, less clickbaity article:

I think the thread title is fine,  almost is quite accurate for a title, especially given you are supposed to read the article or thread for the actual specifics.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

The fact that AMD hasn't been happy with der8auer's videos, dismantling a Threadripper to find out how it works, I would be inclined to say no.

What I want to know is, is there anything stopping board partners from doing it anyway?

We also have to consider if it's even possible, and whether or not it's a good idea in the first place.

EPYC might handle RAM so differently that it wouldn't be compatible with TR4 motherboards on a hardware level.

I have no issue with the thread's title.

But I never stated anything about the thread, just the article.

It really isn't. The system doesn't work, the system doesn't work. No 'almost' about it.

They put the CPU in and didn't have magic smoke escape on startup, by the dictionary definition of "almost", I'd say that covers it sufficiently for a title.

I wouldn't.

What was accomplished is that a mainboard failed to successfully POST with Epyc, big fucking deal. That's not remotely close to working. For it to not be clickbait, I'd say that they'd have to get past the UEFI for it to be qualifiable as 'almost,' but in the meantime, clickbait.

It's a thread title, not the magna carta.

Well, there's a slight update to the story.  I made a comment about his absolute statements that the TR and the Epyc sockets are identical, and this was his response:

Quote

I also checked the pinout (which is under NDA so can’t make it public)

It seems there may be more to the story than he revealed in the video (and thus, was reported on by WCCFTech).

@Drak3 @mr moose

Can we at least agree that this thread's title is better then the article's?

@Jito463 der8auer stated in his video that EPYC's pinout is identical to Threadripper's.

Anyways, I have no issues with an EPYC CPU running on a TR4 motherboard, but you would be nerfing some of EPYC's advantages over Threadripper.

I suppose that there would be a niche audience, such as someone who wants a 32 core CPU, but doesn't want to pay the money for an EPYC motherboard, with all of the limitations that running an EPYC CPU on a TR4 motherboard would cause not being an issue.

You would have only half the PCIe lanes, and only half the maximum RAM, and as der8auer stated, there may be latency issues with the RAM.  Not really a big deal though.

This is assuming if it would work in the first place however.

Nope. Title's not accurate in either case.

A car with a starter that rotates itself, but does not start the car's ignition, is not almost starting. It's quite literally not starting.
