PC Build Help

Ok so I'm trying to make my first ever gaming pc. Now I know there are about 23487346 build guides for this online, But I'm trying to do something a bit crazy.

So my laptop has an Intel Core i7-5500U @ 2.40GHz, and I was wondering if it is viable to put that processor in my build so save a bit of money at first. (This wont be a permanent thing but rather something just to start with.)

Please let me know if I sound dumb for trying to do this or if you think it could actually work

If the processor isn't soldered onto your laptop's motherboard, it's an option. What make and model is your laptop?

First of all, that i7 isnt really worth using in, what i'm guessing is, a desktop build, the current i7s are far more powerful than their mobile counterparts.

Second of all, in 99.9% of all laptops the cpu is permanently attached to the motherboard and cant be removed.

If you wanted to get a decent i7 maybe go for the 7700k

That's not an option as the 5500U is a laptop CPU and will not fit in a desktop CPU socket.

Welcome to the forum!

No, it's not worth using that CPU. It's also not an LGA socket, so it can't be used with any motherboards for desktop systems.

you could buy a laptop motherboard with a socket fitting your cpu and jerry rig it into a case while using this https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIABMK5V68582&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleMKP-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleMKP-PC-_-pla-_-Connectors-_-9SIABMK5V68582&gclid=Cj0KCQiAhrbTBRCFARIsACY7MW1PtCjbnVnPNX8KFsGb22-fB10HehcPFZtrOH3pxov7EGrvb58-RnYaAvEAEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds to fit a gpu in and upgrading your ram. You would still have all of your files and operating system on your old drive and have a pretty sick PC too
