From what I understand there are two different patches out there.  One is a microcode update via a bios update and the other is a windows auto-update.

Honestly, in reading the Intel press release, I don't know either.  It's vague and hard to tell which is which.  I turned off Auto-Updates in Windows till this while thing is finalized.

The reason it sounds vague and no one is sure what patch they are talking about is because the news release is not actually aimed at domestic end users (most of the people on this forums are domestic).  It is regarding a specific patch Intel released earlier which is causing reboot issues on broadwell and haswell.    They have released an early version of a new update and want OEM's, partners, cloud services etc to concentrate on implementing that instead (because it should solve the reboot issue).

 

It is a bit confusing when the headline reads like Intel are just telling everyone not to run updates when that isn't what they are telling anyone at all.

The first sentence explains why they want focus on the new patch (microcode) and the second sentence is verification that they still recommend consumers keep all systems up-to-date (that is from their PC's manufacturer or from MS/OS manufacturer). 

 

 

It actually saddens me a little that so many (self proclaimed enthusiasts) on this forum don't fully appreciate what has happened here and are quick with the assumptions and accusations.

My understanding is if windows is patched then the microcode update can wait until they stabilize it for the CPU you have.   Just check back with Dell every now and then to see what bios updates they have for your model.

Check the Dell Website for BIOS updates. You can either do this directly from their website, or - if installed - their update/support assistant software pre-installed on the computer.
