I just completed Canadian PAL test, and gotta send in the federal application to the rc's.

References will be no problem

Criminal background check should be a breeze as they only care about violence and drugs and guns and mental health.

They must investigate deep into each incident in the persons CPIC file.

It seems there is a 5 year window for mental health.

And I know the rc's call references, but they can not look into the health records, I know that for a fact.

I am not looking to shoot down a cuddly animal and not harvest it, but having its horns is tempting, and the meat would last forever.

I am torn. Because the place I did my test had 1000's of stuffed animals, which is cool but not my thing. The only thing I did are horned animals.

I will practice shooting a lot, gun ranges, bush.

Go out to crown land and kill pest animals like gophers, but to kill Bambie I dunno.

What rifle should I buy?

I am thinking semi auto rifle, with whatever the max clip is legal.

Def not single shot.

Do gun shops in Canada rent rifles?

You better off getting a good rifle with sights on it then bothering with a rifle that has some crazy large clip.

Because, once you fire that first shot off, a deer is going to bolt fast.  Unless of course you nailed it properly right behind the shoulder blade which then the deer should fall to the ground fast.

Heck, I hunt with a bolt action rifle with some nice sights on it.  I go by the idea of nailing on the first shot instead of wasting expensive bullets.

On renting, no clue about gun shops in Canada.  Nutty enough the process you just described just to go hunting.

I am not a hunter but my dad is.

He use bolt action rifle a single shot because u got to learn the hard way he said its called remington something i dont remember the model number

He hunt for pest not for sport though.

If u are a beginner like me i'd suggest to use Scope not sight because u'll aim easier with it.

Unlike sight which u have to line the rifle perfectly straight to gain 100% accuracy with scope u only need to look at the scope and if u see a black border around the side that means ur rifle is not straight or you are too close to the scope.

Or u could just buy a semi auto rifle with a variable scope and a suppressor so the target wont run away especially when u miss the shot cause i dont think single action rifle support supressor mount especially with the old model like my dad has.

and u need to learn how to use them, the stance, breathing technique,Zero'ing the rifle, calculating bullet drop, etc

And dont kill for fun. if u fancy the horn buy them.

Having just taking your pal you should be familiar with what the magazine restrictions are for Canada.

-Centerfire are restriced to 5rounds. (which is what almost all your hunting calibre guns are going to be)

-Rimfire has no restriction

-Semi Auto shotguns are limited to 5rnds

-Pump Shotguns has no restriction

-Pistols are limited to 10rnds.

If your rifle can use a pistol magazine you can legally use 10rnds but since AK and AR platforms are prohibited there are very few choices to actually do this. (custom chassis that takes AICS mags)

Since your only limited to 5rnds a Semi Auto isn't a very popular choice in Canada.

You are aware that bolt actions can have magazines as well and are not all single shot?

You should first choose what calibre you want to shoot before looking for a rifle.  Your also not going to use the same gun to shoot a gopher as your would an elk... Nor would you want to be shooting 17$ bullets at gophers...  Price of ammo should also be looked at before picking up a gun.

I've yet to see a gun shop rent rifles because none of them have ranges big enough to trully get a feel for them so its rather pointless.

Really need a budget to work with before suggesting guns as they can be as cheap as 200 or as much as 25k.

Cant just walk into a Canadian Tire store right off the street and buy a gun without passing a test.

Cant drive a vehicle without passing a test.

Cant go fishing without buying a license and/or a wildlife card.

I was not aware of that.

I want an all round rifle, I dont want more then one gun. Probably just store it in an out of town storage unit or friends house.

I really don't "hunt" anymore at all because of all the regulations involved.  You have to take your PAL, take a hunters safety course, Buy a WIN card everyyear, Purchase a tag beforehand for every animal and all the stupid regulations for dressing and transporting the animal after the fact...  It really takes the enjoyment out of it for me so I just stick to target shooting and blasting away "pest animals" since there is very little regulation involved.

Its really hard to get away with just 1 rifle most people almost always end up with at least a rimfire and a centerfire.

Personally I've got a .22 30-06 and a .308.

What is the biggest animal you plan to hunt? shooting coyotes get a .223 , for deer .270, .308, 30-06, 6.5CM  Elk, Moose and Bears probably want a .300WM ,338 or 7mm.

Good starting rifle is a remington 783 its available in all the common calibres and comes with a scope and is available in every imaginable finish for under 500$. Its bolt action but has a 5rnd magazine.

Few other guns that should get a honorable mention.

Norinco M14 - another long time favorite thats available in so many different calibers and configurations (700-2500$) semi auto

Reminton 700.  Tried and true gun that used by most law enforment marksmen in north america. (around 1500$) bolt action

SKS - chinese service rifle, cheapest semi auto you can get, tons of aftermarket for it, not very accurate but super cheap ammo. 7.62x39 (200-300$)

Ruger 10/22 - basically the go to .22 calibre but recently had a restriction making its 25rnd magazines prohibited so its limited to the factory 10rnders.(300-400$)

CZA VZ58 - basically the semi auto ak47 for canadian market (1400$) 7.62x39 so cheap ammo again.

RA XCR - your AR style combat rifle for the canadian market ( 3500$) carbine and .308 semi auto

GSG-15 - sweet looking 22-25rnd .22 semi auto.  Looks really bad ass but is picky on ammo and is very hard to clean. (500$)

Also might want to learn the difference between horns and antlers we don't have many horned animals =p

Depends on what State you are in down here.

Some require tests while others require to do a short class.  I had to do a short class, but no background check to use a rifle (long guns in most States don't require it, but most States require it for a handgun).

Myself, I don't have nothing against a test being required.  Then again, the vehicles down here keep killing people more than most things even though there is a test required to drive those.

Well if I was living in a state that required this and that and the other thing, I'd just buy from another state with the least requirements. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_by_state

In Canada its a federal thing for safety reasons.
