So my current CPU is a FX8350. Im looking to buy a new CPU motherboard and ram since those are the oldest components in my system. I do play games but i also do light productivity work. Im wondering what would be the best route for me to g right now seeing as how i haven't kept up with the CPU game. Essentially would it be better to go with Ryzen or Intel at this point?

if you got the cash for it an 8700k is probably the best option for you at this time or the 8600k depending on your needs, I've heard some mumbling about the next intel cpus coming soonish (I wouldn't think before 2H) and then there's the ryzen refresh that should (hopefully) address the biggest issue ryzen has faced, limited overclocking potential, coming Aprilish If you feel like waiting to see...

You don't have to overclock, most motherboards have a feature on by default called Multi core enhancement, which will put all cores of an 8700k at 4.7ghz.  You could buy an 8700 also which with same feature will put all cores to 4.6ghz.

Its really up to you and how much money you wanna spend.  My guess is a 12 thread CPU will last a lot long then a 6 thread cpu if you were to guy an i5.

But an 8700 non K is just as good if said motherboard has the Multicore enhancement feature.

If you did get an 8700k by silicon lottery's numbers, over 70% of 8700ks can hit 5ghz.   And its pretty easy now days to OC,  all you have to do is change around 3 settings and that's it.

Do we know what kind of budget he is working with?

Kinda hard to assume with the raising price of ddr4 not to mention low volume of gpus available makes the cost considerably more to obtain this hardware for EVERYONE.

I'm sure almost everyone would love a 8700k build but i believe the harder part of this build will be finding a gpu to match it with that doesn't consume 65-75% of the budget

eh, its about equal to the 1600x according to leaks, so if he wants to spend money instead of waiting, he could do that too.

To clarify im only looking to upgrade my cpu, ram, motherboard and cooler. I Have a great graphics card that i dont plan on upgrading at this time. if i had to put a hard budget it would have to be at around $700 USD

If you don't want to overclock go with either a i5-8400 or i7-8700, its up to you if you think you need the extra threads. also for a mother board don't pay extra for a Z370 since you won't need that overclocking capability, just go with one that has the features you want and that fits your budget.

I thought z370 was the only chipset that is currently compatible with intel 8th gen.

Currently there are only z370 boards available, I wouldn't bother with the i7 tbh, it will help with the productivity work but the i5 or ryzen 5 is still no slouch in that department, and sure in theory extra threads would make a CPU last longer in terms of gaming but there's more factors to gaming performance than simply thread count, but if you think it will help have a look at ryzen 7 1700, and I would certainly consider over clocking especially with ryzen, hope this helps

We don't no the budget

resolution

refreshrate

or gpu

asuming you not an elitist as u still have a fx cpu and assuming you don't have a 1080ti

a 1600 on a b350 board oced on the stock cooler is the best option for budget

the 12 threads will really really help in the workstation stuff and will preform the same as a 1800x

alternativly a 8400 would have slightly better gaming if your not gpu bound

but if ur gona run anything lower than a 1080 a 1600 woundnt bottleneck you or if it does u will already be over 100 fps

and the threads will really help with smoothness and workloads

-14900kf

- 4000 32gb ram

-4070ti super duper
