CPU upgrade, what to pick right now?

Hey guys,

I want to upgrade my CPU because it is really holding me back in some game and emulation. Now, I am sill on DDR3, so I have to upgrade ram, mobo and cpu at the same time. So switching to intel is also an option. I am looking at picking a Ryzen 5 1600 right now. Do you have any other suggestion? Some people have told me to wait for the Ryzen upgrade in april, I was never a fan of holding for the next generation because there will always be a next one and there is always going to be people telling you to wait.

Looking at my GPU usage when gaming is telling me that my CPU is a big bottleneck right now (8350). I play modded Skyrim, I want to play Breath of the Wild, I also play PUBG and a looot of Rocket league (this one is not really a problème).

My GPU is a GTX 970. I WILL overcloak as I have a Noctua NH-U14s.

So, do I wait, or go now, or do I go Intel.

What are your thought about it?

Ram is pretty pricey, but if you really want to upgrade it's your decision

What's your budget and is this rig strictly for gaming?

Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.9 Ghz  | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 |  PaliT GTX 1050Ti  |  8gb Kingston HyperX Fury @ 2933 Mhz  |  Corsair CX550m  |  1 TB WD Blue HDD

Inside some old case I found lying around.

Better go for an i5-8400 and a Z370 mobo. And if u can, upgrade ur gtx 970 to sthing like a gtx 1060.

If you can stretch your budget to it, consider an I5 8600k, or as mentioned above the I5 8400.

Linus is my fetish.

RAM will fuck your budget. i'd honestly wait for Ryzen+ because the 4GHz ceiling(often less) of the current linup will not do good on PUBG specifically. and that's one of the thing that will improve for sure with the new ones

Emulation, Cemu to be more precise. Its in a pretty good state right now but relly heavily on single core performance.

If you don't want to buy new RAM, grab a Z97/4790K combo and let 'er rip.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Do you think the price will come down until april?

This could be a viable solution. There are some cheap I7 on ebay I could grab. Tho I feel like I would be delaying the enivitable switch to DDR4. I upgrade my ram to 16gb 3 months ago buying used from a friend.

aside from switching to a 2600k/3770k/4790k (whatever mobo/cpu combo you find with ddr3 on ebay, i actually saw a cpu mobo combo for 160 a month ago), the 2 best options are:

r5 1600/asrock b350 pro4/cl14 ddr3000/3200 ram for about 450usd total for 60hz gaming. this beats the 8400 hands down because of the extra threads and cheaper motherboard.

i7 8700/asus z370 prime-a/16gb ram+ a h7/212 evo cooler for about 700usd for gaming+emu and a path future 120hz gaming with a gpu upgrade.

if you are gonna play on 144hz, make sure you check youtube to see if the r5 1600 runs the games at 120hz+ (main reason i didn't go with ryzen), the 8700 will do it fine for sure, but it does cost more overall.

I live in Canada, the current I7 is not an option. 180$ more than the 1600. The R5 seemed a good option because its not overkill for the 970 I have right now. And it will probably not bottleneck my future GPU maybe 1-2 years from now.

I can tell u for certain the r5 does bottleneck the 1080/1080 ti on AAA titles (there will be others that tell u otherwise so it's up to u to decide), but then it's much cheaper. It mostly runs into trouble above 110fps on some games.

Again, i'd check to make sure it runs rocket league on 144hz in ur case.

For a bit more I could go I5 7600k combo on ebay. with 8 or 16 gb of ddr4. I dont see an absolute need to go current gen.

7th gen is dead, you are doing the seller a favor by buying it unless it's really cheap, there are rumors that ice lake (8c/16t intel) is gonna work with a z370 with a bios flash, and zen+ is coming out in april (a 4.4ghz ryzen would quell my 120fps concern on amd), i know i tried to simply it into 2 options but that's what we are looking at atm

If I go last gen, obvioulsy it wouldnt be full price. I'd look into a deal on ebay. For now I think I am gonna wait. I dont wont to make a hasty descision. Intel seems to be pricier for the performance as always.

Now is a very bad time to build a pc. Ram price is ridiculously high, gpu price is ridiculously high. Intel’s newest 8th gen cpu is pretty much out of stock in many places and current amd ryzen have no on board graphics forcing you to buy those ridiculously high priced video cards.

Buy a prebuilt pc might be a better idea.

It's a pathetic cash grab by intel and people don't have to deal with there greedy shit anymore. But I guess if you want to be a pawn for them, go ahead.

I'd say either the 1600 or maybe the R 1700 if you can afford it. But STAY AWAY from the Kaby lake shit. Yeah the 8700k is great for gaming but your paying out your ass for the CPU and the mobo. And you have no upgrade path if you want more. But with Ryzen you have how many years of mobo compatibility. Unlike some greedy jackass's who change it LITERALLY every new CPU. Like what the hell is that.

Don't be a pawn, use your head and get even more cores for a lower price. Like the 1700 or 1800 get into 3-4% fps of the 8700k And you get two more cores for almost a hundred bucks less.
