Is an 8700k a justifiable upgrade for high res high refresh rate gaming over Ryzen 1700?

Hey guys.

So I found an Intel 8700k open box for 300 and was thinking of nabbing it. I have a Ryzen 1700 oc to 3.8ghz @ 1.325v.

I currently game on a 34" Alienware aw3418dw 1440p 120hz monitor. My games tend to hover around 100 fps with high graphics and whatnot. I want to try and keep graphical settings high but still maintain Max fps.

Would an 8700k be justified at this price? Microcenter also has 30 bucks off bundled with a mobo.

I could try and sell my cpu and mobo to try and recoup costs

Edit: GPU is 1080 Ti sc2 oc'd to +50/+425 core/memory

I would upgrade, the 8700k is hands down the best gaming processor.

Depends.

At 3440x1440 res you are usually GPU bound if you want to stick to high settings so CPU will not make that big of a difference but 8700k is definitely better for higher refresh rate gaming over the R7 1700 if you are not GPU bound.

YES. High res isn't really a task the 1700 struggles with, but high res HIGH REFRESH... now there's a problem.

I don't follow news too much but what's the likelihood of another chipset being released by Intel.

Or Ryzen+ being equal in singke core performance.

They release a new chipset every October, I think people are hyping Ryzen plus personally, it's not bringing a lot to the table.

I bought the Ryzen in May last year. The high refresh was a recent acquisition.

If you got money to spend and desperately need more frames, then go for it. I got nothing but good to say about the 8700k, but i would wait for the next gen intel processors before getting a new one.

also dont bother waiting for amd to catch up to the 8700k if you are planning to get another cpu, unless you shit and bleed amd ofc

The i7-8700K is definitely the best gaming processor out right now, so if you want the best gaming processor, go for it. But, Zen 2 is being released shortly with the same socket, so if they end up being good for gaming (I highly doubt better than the 8700K, though), you would be able to upgrade and save some money, since you could keep the same motherboard and wouldn't have to replace that.

Hello! It's me just passing through :)

Going from Ryzen to an 8700K would give you a pretty big bump if you're going for something like 1080p144 (I did so myself last month), but at 3440x1440 I'm not sure your gains would be big enough to justify a $500-600 USD switch. If you were at 1080p, definitely. At your resolution, it depends on the games you want to play. If you're playing mobas like Dota 2 and other games like CS:GO, where the game isn't pretty enough to demand that much from the GPU and therefore relies more on the CPU, then the upgrade would be noticeable.

Otherwise, I'm not so sure. If you're willing to lower your settings a bit in order to achieve that delicious 144+ in more demanding games at that resolution, then the 8700K will make a difference.
