I was trying to make a split off for a fan header and I shorted out one of the contacts and a component near the fan header blew. MOBO posts and I removed my storage and GPU. It's my only fan header sans CPU fan. Do I buy new motherboard asap or use this one still?

The board might still function but that fan header is dead.

If that cap's connected to the fan header circuit only, you might be alright running the motherboard still just don't connect a fan into that header. If it's the CPU fan header, you'll need to go to the BIOS and disable CPU Fan warning so you don't get issues with the motherboard thinking the CPU isn't being cooled.

I connected a fan to it before I realized that's what blew up... The fan spun up and didn't seem to change. Ik it's part of the fan circuit because I shorted the fan header to the heatsink by accident

yeah even if the circuit still works i would'nt use it damaged like that. try to do without it as others suggested.

Yeah that probably shorted directly to ground then so it took out the weakest link, looks like a capacitor or resistor got burnt up. It doesn't look like it burnt down into the PCB so you should be good, just becareful and use another chassis header for the CPU fans and such.

You can use powered adapters that directly connect to the PSU if needed but you won't have direct ability to set fan curves.

If you don't have another fan header on your motherboard, you can buy a separate fan controller.  Or if you don't mind running the fan at 1 setting you can just get a molex to 3/4 pin fan adapter or something.
