Never, if these memory manufacturers have any smarts about them they will slowly raise their prices to match any drops to increase profit margins.

I think GPUs will get Cheaper once AMD and nVidia come out with their dedicated Mining cards and by that the Demand for Gaming GPUs will fall

Now data centres can't use geforce maybe we will see an influx of them on the likes of eBay. And dedicated mining cards have been a thing since around 5 months after the RX 400 series was released. Very few miners actually bought them.

They won't fall. So don't count on that. Old generation stuff will be bit cheaper when new generation comes to market. RAM isn't likely to drop anytime soon. Not massive drops anyway. Main principle of marketing is to make money. And high prices guarantee every company very high margins. For change. So it isn't beneficial to any to drop prices to gain customers.

No word of a price drop in the foreseeable future, so either bite the bullet, or buy a used (Haswell) system. Not really any other choice if you need a PC soon.

And this is assuming they're actually cheaper in every way than the 1060

I'm not sure about that because AMD and Nvidia still are having to sell an unprecedented amount of chips as their GPUs open up to a new and bigger market than gamers.

In other words, what's gonna stop miners from buying both the mining AND the gaming cards? Driver or BIOS level tweaks on "gaming" cards that would prevent them from mining could be worked around or patched with custom drivers / BIOSs.

never from the looks of it there might be price fixing involved with the dram market and both graphics card manufactures need to step up production or mining needs to completely die

Maybe when Ethereum goes Proof of Stake. Hopefully. Their ideas for the PoS algorithm could both ease the problem with GPU supply as well as the stupid amounts of power that miners use to secure the ethereum blockchain. It might be a couple years before it goes entirely Proof of Stake though, since the first implementation will only have a subset of all blocks secured with that method to save the risk of a bug in the algorithm killing everyone's money.

So I predict 2018 will still have very high GPU prices past the entry level, while DRAM is more likely to go down this year.

I think it's realistic to make a bit more narrow of a prediction :P

It's as narrow it can be.

Personally, I am aware that IT  prices may increase.

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.

It's not even guaranteed that GPU prices will ever go down, so if you want to be 100% accurate you can't even say they will go down somewhere between today and the end of time :P

Instead, you can make an educated opinion on a narrow-ish interval of time with 90 or 99% accuracy and call that a prediction.

I got a good way. How about the Government taxes all the miners? Capital Gains Tax. Seeing how bit coin is worth tens of thousands. I dont see what people see in crypto currency. Its not stable, and its not backed by anything.

Its not backed by any Government. While US currency is not technically backed by anything substantial. The US goverment holds a shit load of Gold. So in a way, that kinda gives people more confidence to trust US currency. Bit coin has no government backing.

It's fiat currency, the ultimate form of it. It has worth because people believe it does.

I doubt that. They just won't get support from NVIDIA. If they really need it, they'll bend over. But for those that think they can squirt by, they won't care.

The person has to report it first, which good luck proving something is yours considering cryptocurrency is set up to be as anonymous as possible.

EDIT: Legally you're supposed to report any and all income to the IRS. However, I don't think a lot of people who make money from hobbies do that. And until the IRS audits them, there's no way they can prove they had any more income than what the person declared.

Which is why the Government needs to regulate it. Put is claws in to it, and make it not anonymous.

So is paper money though? And so are bank checks. If the banks don't believe that this check is worth the number written you have a piece of paper.

I think I see your point, there's also not yet any big company that has made the risky move of switching their payment methods to bitcoin.

How do you do that though? You regulate one coin, people (who want to make payments with anonymity for criminal purposes or otherwise) can just make a new blockchain and secure it by themselves with compute power. You would need a big stranglehold on everyone's internet connections.

How do you regulate something that's globally decentralized?

That's just the way modern money works. Everyone believes it has some value.

But I guess the defining point is that cyptocurrency currently is not legal tender in any country (as far as I know). It is treated as property in some though.
