GPU recommendation failed

Go to solution Solved by martward,

Well unless he can still bring the GPU back I don't see any reason telling him about it. Also you shouldn't feel bad. You suggested he buy a used one and he didn't even though it is pretty well known for anyone who is interested that the GPU market is very unfavorable.

If he can return the card, tell him. If he can't, don't tell him, you are only making him feel less good about his PC.

so i just picked the parts for the new build of a collegue of mine meaning i told him what to get and he'll buy it and put together

BUT i suggested he get a freesync monitor and a used rx 480/580 which made perfect sense for his budget and he was fine with it

BUT now he said he couldnt find any used ones although i sent him a couple offers and he just went and bought a new one for 390 instead of the 250ish on the used market.

we all now at that pricepoint its not a good deal so feal teaarable for suggesting it and he overpayed so much.

how do i tell him that at that price its not a good deal? do i tell him at all itll still be enough but he just threw away 150 bucks on my recommendation. maybe i should have specified more clearly that the new price is not worth paying for  it. idk i fell terrible calling his rig my idea/creation/whatever

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"

Perhaps explain that he bought it at an inflated price and suggest he pay around the normal price (even if "normal price" is a used 480/580).

I don't know what the pricing is like where you are, was the new one at a reasonable price for such? Arguably there is still some value in new over used, in terms of warranty should anything go wrong in future. Is there something significantly better (new) that could have been got at that price?

BTW I had similar experience before when colleague was thinking about building their first gaming system. I showed them pcpartpicker, and for an example low cost system I went Haswell even though Skylake had only just come out. I said clearly this was just an example, but talk to me again when he was ready to buy and we can check out what was better around the time. Some time passed and I saw a load of packages come in... he had ordered it exactly as it was in pcpartpicker. It wasn't bad, a quad core Haswell with 480, but quite likely Skylake had dropped enough to be a better choice by that point with some more upgrade path.

ok i just talked to him and it turns out his wife talked him into getting new instead of used when spending this much money on a system so now hes cancelling the order (lucky i talked to him before it was even send out, he had just ordered it) and hell be getting a 1060 wich is as you all know similar performance at the 250ish price a used 580 what have been. so all is good except now that freesync monitor doesnt make so much sense :P
