CPU upgrade

Hey im looking to upgrade my CPU from my i3-7100 (My PC: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8H6LWX). I would like this to be the last time i have to touch my CPU for awhile, looking to spend 200$ish. I would like to keep my motherboard (Which dose NOT support overclocking) so i was looking at the i5-8400, would this be a good choice or should I go with something else? Thanks for reading :P

If you get a newer CPU, you'll need a new motherboard as well. At that price range, the most you could get is an i3-8100 and a Z370 board for it. I would recommend looking at the i7-7700

You couldnt get 8th gen while keeping the motherboard because Intel (an arsehole) decides to cut compatibility because it's time to do so (2 generations passed) rather than they need to. i7 6700/7700 is your best bet, though K versions will also work (just without further overclocking). The used market often turns out better deals too.

i7 7700 is the highest you can go, i5 8400 uses LGA 1151-v2

The chipset actually changed to include more power delivery for higher power requirement CPUs and faster RAM

Spend the extra $100 and get a cheap z370 and an i5-8400. Really solid CPU. Alternatively, look into Ryzen 5.

Not severely, but I'd reccomend looking into a used 1070 or 980 Ti. Where I live, used 980 Tis go for about $200.

Yeah, I dont know that i have a large sum of money to spend straight up. I think ill stick with 1080p until the 1440p is normal in a few years

Yeah I dont know, I think there is a big gap in between people who want to spend a lot of money and enjoy building computers and the people to slap together something just to play games

No. Save for an i5-8400 and a cheap Z370. THAT'S an upgrade path (to 8700 or 8700k, or 9700k when Canon Lake or whatever comes out) on LGA 1151-v2, not a last-gen socket (LGA 1151-v1). Besides, the 8400 is pretty much just as powerful as the 7700 according to UserBenchmark.com.

Actually, some Chinese geeks cracked that. They are selling 8100s with H110/B250 mobo with modded BIOS already, while the only loss is that the PCIe slots run at 2.0 bandwidth. Even the 8400s are stable on a beefy Z170/270 mobo, it's just that many features, like M.2, USB 3, SATA ports, doesnt work at all. Eventually, they will come on sale as well (probably not outside China though due to law enforcement issues)

 

As for memory, why bother? RAM overclocking is already a common practice for those who care. For those who dont, they'll just get the cheap stuff which are usually 2133 or 2400.
