Re activating windows after hardware change

So I changed the hardware in my computer and tried to reactivate using the same key. the person at Microsoft said it was a window 8 key EVEN though I used it to activate windows 10 4 months earlier. W10 pro 64 btw.

why did this key work on windows 10 and when I called Microsoft they said the key was windows 8 key? I'm just trying to reactivate it. I did try the changed hardware option under activation. still did not work.???

Motherboard is what is associated to the key.  It works on windows 10 after an update to windows 10 has been applied.  Was free at one point.  The key will let you reinstall windows 10 on that setup.  New setup will only recognize the key as windows 8.  I would call and say that my free upgrade isn't so free anymore if it will not let me apply it to my new hardware.  They may give you a new key.  Not likely tho.

Once converted over it will activate a Windows 10 install without issue. It was originally a Windows 8 key but the system converts it and ties it to Windows 10 once switched over.

you didnt linked your MS account with your computer?

Microsoft in there infinite wisdom have decided to impose a VRAM cap for games the that use DX9 o.O. May God Bless them those whoever came up with that idea.

Once you changed the motherboard it will only recognize the key as windows 8 again.  The free update to 10 only applies to the board that was present during the upgrade.  The windows 8 key then acts as a windows 10 key as the board will be registered to that serial and will show that it has had the windows 10 applied.  New board ID is not associated with the applied update.

But is the key for Win8 or not? If it's registered to be Win10 key, then it will activate Win10. Or if it's connected to your MS account, you can just login and OS will activate.
