Ryzen 7 1700 bottlenecks high hz gaming. Should I go with 8600k?

Hey guys 

 

So I bought a 240hz monitor today and I noticed I wasn't getting very high  FPS w/ my 1080 Ti for 1080p gaming. Hovering around 130fps. I turned my game (R6 Siege) down to Low and it stayed the same. Opened task manager and it shows my CPU sitting at 98%. This is a Ryzen 7 1700 OC'd to 3.9GHz. 

 

So I am thinking of selling my Mobo + Cpu to my friend and getting a coffee lake CPU. Should I go with the 8600k? 

 

I've thought maybe I can do editing! but not enough to justify the price jump of $150 from i5 (k series) to i7 (k series).

I would go with the i7-8700K, but from what I hear the 8600K gets around the 200Hz mark. 

 

@LaboonTheWhale Looks like both get the same Hz with a 1080 Ti. If you want to edit and record, the 8700K would work better.

Its $379.99 vs $229.99 + tax. It seems hard to justify. I guess if I want best of the best.

How about i7 non-K? Gaming peformance isnt much worse than 8600k, but hyper threading makes it faster in video editing.

In that case, get the i5 and get close to the average 5.0GHz.

I bought a decently beefy cooler to cool the Ryzen 7 1700 (dark rock TF) and would seem to go to waste to go non-overclocking.

get the 8700k if budget isn't a concern. I'm MUCH happier with the 8700k vs the 8600k

in what way? I found a benchmark of Gamer's Nexus on the 8600k + 8700k at stock and 5GHz and they just seem to trade blows.

At those prices definitely not. In the vast majority of current games there is no difference between a 8700K and 8600K. Maybe in a couple of years we may see games starting to take better advantage of the extra threads.

there are multiple reasons, i won't list them cause it's just small annoyances that adds up. If the entire build's budget is 2k+, it's not worth saving the 100dollars, or just go with the 8700 instead of the 8600k, save on the cooler and it'll end up being the same price.

 

If you do wanna know, shoot me a pm, it's quite a long list for something that many say isn't worth the price difference.

Already have a darkrock TF cooler. But its hard to understand how its worth it from my part if that is all that you're saying. 

 

non-k is $130 more. So it would be dumb to save $20 just for non-OC'ing w/ a beefier cooler.

oh if u already have a cooler than the non-k might not be worth it, it's only 40dollars more than the 8600k in the US.

Exactly. With a few exceptions, like AOTS (who actually plays that?!) and The Witcher 2, the 8700K and 8600K are pretty much indistinguishable

Prices I listed are from microcenter near me. 230 for 8600k, 380 for 8700k and 350 for 8700.

TFW there's an mc near you, way too many people get the 8700/8700k instead of the 8600k (can tell with newegg and siliconlottery), 230's a good deal tho.

The OP has a 240Hz screen. Only a 1080 Ti is capable of pushing those kind of framerates at 1080P.

I don't think half the comments here read your full needs for the cpu... Or just like to throw money away.

 

Just buy the 8600k. If you don't care about editing and only want to game, you will never notice a difference. It's not worth the big price premium.

My 1060 and R5 1600 can push 300FPS in CSGO at 1080p
