What makes a custom ROM custom?

Lineage OS is a custom ROM, but Xiaomi was creating custom ROMs which makes me wonder if they are still using same type of ROM still does that mean they have custom ROM out of the box? Or are they no longer custom because they are included with the phone? Are custom ROMs even Android? What is the rules what makes it custom? :3

custom rom = different from what the device has been originally shipped with.

that depends on the rom but i would assume that it is still android ... just somehow different from what the phone originally had ... different UI, less bloatware, etc

I don't understand the question. As for Play Store -- yes, if you install the Google Apps - package on top of it. Gapps are installed the same way the ROM itself is, ie. flashed from recovery. This is to say, LineageOS itself doesn't ship with any Google-software, you have to install LineageOS and an addon-package to it, but after that Play Store works just as well as it would on official ROMs.

no android = no play store

 

if you want anything that has any relevant apps at all you only have two options: android based systems or iOS. 

 

everything else has never had a good selection of apps to begin with and thus never took off and development for apps or even the operating system itself is pretty much dead by now. 

 

firefox OS = dead

ubuntu phone = dead

windows phone = sort of dead

Custom rom = a ROM made not by the official developers

You could have a custom rom for xiaomi,samsung,oppo,vivo,etc ias long as there's a people who made that ROM.

The installation itself is different from Stock ROM.

Usually u have to unlock the bootloader,etc and use custom recovery.

And by unlocking bootloader some manufacturer will revoke your warranty.

The cons of custom rom is because they are not made by official dev themselves sometimes there are a lot of bugs and problems within the ROM.

One of the pros of custom rom is that if somehow u want to update your android firmware BUT u cant find higher version of it in the official website u could find a custom rom that has higher version of android and it will work.

Afaik there are none.

Most custom rom are for android devices.

And yes custom rom is still an android after all.

It can run pretty much stock rom could.

Any ROM which doesn't ship with the phone.  99% are based on Android, but a very few have custom kernels and stuff....

For the bloat ware issue you may as well just buy from another brand, and for upgrades some brands gives you 1 or 2 which should be fine! O3O

You're talking about carrier-bloatware, but many manufacturers themselves slap on insane amounts of their own bloatware, too. Just look at e.g. Samsung. As for upgrades: some of us aren't stupid enough to buy a new phone every year. I used my LG G2, for example, for 3-4 years, and LG stopped updating the firmware long before that; LineageOS made the phone much snappier and gave me up-to-date Android with newest security-updates.

Nokia is good at updates and there is no bloat-ware to speak of unless you buy it from Amazon! But is it easy to make my own ROM? I want to make a ROM that has all of Googles bloat-ware removed and replaced with Microsofts(Edge, Outlook & Onedrive etc) bloat-ware! Also I will include the Amazon & Google App store! :3

No idea, never done that. Might wanna go and browse the xda-developers' forums or hop on to LineageOS IRC-channel if youre interested in such.
