GPU Debate

Vertikull

Hey everyone. I'm building a personal rig and I can't decide on a GPU. In my current rig, i have a GTX 1060 3gb but here are what im considering:

- 1070

- 980ti

- Dual 980ti

Which one would be the best price/performance card?

Thx everyone!

1070 for sure. Although 980ti sli might perform better, not many games/apps support it.

Not sure on budget yet. This is really just for future reference. i run at 1080p but plan on 4K in a few months

1070 is a touch faster than a 980ti, if you can power both cards a used 980ti is better value.

Actually, as an owner and watercooler of both a 1070 and 980 ti, the 980 ti sees massive improvements with an OC and handily beats a 1070

well a 1070 will be more futureproof than other options

Go with the 1070.

-Run almost any game at 1080p, max settings and 1440 med-high settings.

-It's very power efficient, quiet and cool running (even the FE which I have).

-Don't be deceived by GPUBoost 3.0, they actually OC ALOT (above the actual rated base/boost clocks).

-Has more than enough Vram (8GB) for future gaming at 1080p/1440. (980Ti may become limited here, like the 980 did with only 4GB).

-Don't bother with SLI. Only works well in a handful of games, if that and can give you more issues/tinkering than it's worth. SLI is becoming a very niche thing.

-Newer, can still be purchased brand new with full warranty.

Considering this is for the future I think a 2060 or 2070 will be much better for future proofing.  I would hold out on the 1060 until next gen drops.

4k? None of those, 1080 is the minimum. if you can't spend that much wait for Volta.

I would agree with above, 1080 or 1080ti for 4k or wait. unless your fine turning setttings way down.

Would all struggle at 4k. 980ti sli would be top choice if the games you play aren't poorly made.

Any would be fine on 1080p but youll be left wanting more with a 1070 on 4k.

Out of the three options, i would probably go with the 1070. I don't think that sli is all that well supported sometimes and would rather go with the newer 1070 over a 980ti. However for 4k I believe you need to go 1080 and up and still you will have reduced frame rates.

if I were in this situation though and wanting to do 4k, I would be tempted to wait for the next gen cards to see if there is better 4k support at the price point of the 1070, or more if you save a little bit more by then.
