is the 2 GB cards age end and have started the 3 GB time ?

7850OC

No not really. A lot of games seem to need about 1.2GB but their VRAM usage climbs over time to reach 2GB or even more. Games like BF4 for example do this, and yet you don't get any apparent performance benefit to having more. We don't know what is going on, its clearly some sort of streaming of assets, but they run OK on the lower VRAM. No one yet has done a review to show what the drawback is to having less VRAM, mainly because the impact of the performance of the card matters a whole lot more.

To be in the day of needing more than 2GB we would need to have some games that genuinely don't run at 1080p with settings the card could otherwise handle, and historically that has never happened and I have no good evidence its happening today. The new texture streaming API I think is responsible for the climb in VRAM usage shown in tools like GPU-Z, but it unfortunately tells us nothing about what is necessary, only what its using.

I hope not yet at least. I just ordered a 270x.

But then again if I need to I can just add another one.

Nothing to see here - move along.
