- ignore the plug requirement

- pick a PSU of your liking

- check the spec sheet to see if it has dual 8-pin

=> if it has, you're set

=> if it hasnt, start over.

this man.. got some odd tastes in PC hardware :P

it's like me running an i7 4770 and a GT640 for gaming.. but more expensive :P

He really does his current computer has an i7 950 and gtx 980

I can barely justify my 1600X I have no idea what he's gonna do with a 1920X

Edit: and this is all for 1080p gaming at 144hz ?

Spoiler

feels oddly suitable..

its like he realised his cpu is holding him back, so he decided to way overspend on a new cpu, and then got a way too small upgrade on his GPU.

Honestly when he first said threadripper I was at least expecting a 1080ti

He doesn't need a TR for gaming (which is what I'll assume its for, given the GPU). All he needs is an R7, or something from coffee lake. If he gets threadripper, his GPU will become the bottleneck...

i'd tell the guy to hang onto his 980 for a little while longer, and save up the dough for when an 1180/2080 launches. (i'll LOL if they have the balls to call it a 2160)

Oh I know that he just doesn't care

I mean he sometimes streams? But ryzen 7 can still handle that

Well, since he just wants a nicer PC than you, and apparently not useful performance, he might as well get the Cooler Master MIJ or a Seasonic Prime Ultra.

The Corsair RMx/RMi 850W also have 2 CPU connectors, and are among the quietest PSUs.

:)

Yeah my 1700X never gets to above 50% load doing anything. Playing at 144Hz 1080P makes no sense with a 12-core. A 7700K would be ideal for that really.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Tell him he can get a rzyen 1700 or bigger and use the saved money for a gtx 1080ti and maybe a new monitor.Show him some videos from youtube where they compare the threadripper vs the ryzen 7.Gaming most games the 7 is faster or they are even.Streaming i haven' looked at but im sure the rzyen 7 will be on par or better. But back on topic i believe a 750 to 850 watts should cover his needs with a tr4 build.

My friend wants to do a thread ripper build for some stupid reason and despite my effort to tell him he doesn't need it. He just said he wants it so here I am wondering which power supply have the dual 8 pin cpu supply for it.

Well, better Threadripper than Skylake-X at least...

Anyway, couple of Questions:
a) IS overclocking planned or possible?? If we talk about a work computer that earns money, OC must not be done!

b) what graphics cards are gonna be used?

Those two factors determ what PSU you need.

If no CPU OC, then a good 550W PSU is enough and you don't need two 8pin connectors also.

That is only needed for OC:..
