Finally, found a way to ACTUALLY improve CPU performance in games

Hello all,

After being somewhat disappointed with windows 10 game made, I started looking for solutions that would ACTUALLY make a difference in performance during more "cpu bound" games, and I believe I found one.

The solution is to set games as "high" priority in task manager. For those who don't know, setting a program's priority higher will give it more cpu time, resulting in a boost in cpu performance.

However there is one major issue with this, priorities in task manager are not saved by windows, once you reboot you have to manually go back into task manager and reset all your priorities.

Until today, I found the solution that should be the standard for all PC's. Its a program called "Prio", AND IT ACTUALLY LETS YOU SAVE PROGRAM PRIORITIES!!! (Link: https://www.prnwatch.com/prio/ )

Once you install it here's what to do (I'd recommend rebooting after installing just to avoid any wierd glitches)

1. Open the game you are having performance issues with and minimize it

2. Open task manager

3. Go into the "Processes" tab

4. Right click on the game in the list in the "background processes section"

5. Click on "Go to details"

6. You should now be in the "Details" tab, with the game already highlighted. Just scroll until you see it

7. Hover over "Cpu Priority" and select "High" Make sure "Save priority" is also checked (I attached a pic of what it should look like)

8. Close down task manager and you should be all set to go!

I also would suggest doing this to certain background programs that take up CPU time, but instead setting their priority to low so they take up less resources (I set the steam bootstrapper and Razer Synapse to low priority for example)

Well, let me know if this made any big difference in games like GTA V. I'm curious of your guy's results.

(For the record, my CPU is an i5 4570, if you're rocking a newish i7 you might not see the same improvements I did, but if you're using a 4 core i5 or an i3 then i'd HIGHLY recommend this)

That is all, take care!

I wasen't very clear on that my apologizes, but I DID see a big difference.

My minimums went up about 10 FPS in GTA

Nothing about "I believe I found one" and "let me know if this made any big differences in games like GTA V" scream "I tried it and it works" even without numbers :P

I used GTA as an example as it is CPU bound. I didn't include numbers as the benchmark didn't reflect my experience. I noticed significantly less dips in heavy traffic areas for example.

Set Priority is definitely advantageous for certain games and can also help with prioritizing CPU utilization during capture/streaming with lower core count chips.

I've got to admit, when I saw the title of this thread, I didn't think it was going to be about setting priority, which has been a thing for years. :D

u dont need any tools to set this into effect, its been a feature in windows for a long time

u can just set priorities to high/realtime on those u want more performance on , coz the focus iwll go more towards those

realtime is even better than high x)

I just figured i'd share considering it makes a difference and no one seems to talk about it lol

@basedthirst  You should also play around with setting affinity.  Doing so will allow you to assign applications within the Task Manager to specific cores/threads on the CPU.  For example, you can designate cores 0 through 7 to a game a game and 8 through however many you have to OBS or whatever.  Really good tool for those playing high FPS while trying do more than one thing on a lower core count CPU.

Who else think company could have named their site better? :D

I'm sure you can already do this with scheduled tasks. Set process to high priority as soon as it starts. No need for extra background software to do it for you.

You can, but windows will not save the priority. You have to manually go in each time and set the priority everytime you open a program
