So i was planning on getting a new processor because i'm currently running a Pentium.... I was looking into getting either the i5-4690 or the i7 4790k. I am currently using the MSI H8M1 E34 motherboard (I know it isn't the best) and it uses 4th gen processors. Now the issue i'm having is that i'm not sure if the VRM could handle a Devil's Canyon. I heard the i5-4690 or 4690k (I dont plan on overclocking with how my setup is rn) are the 2 best i5s but i haven't used them personally so i'm not totally sure. Could the motherboard handle the power of a 4790k or would it be best to stick with the i5-4690 (Or is there a better i5 than that)?  Id like to keep the current build except for the processor since i'm not planning on running games like Battlefront 2 at a high res. Im going to be playing games like H1Z1, CSGO, PUBG, War Thunder, etc. What do you guys think would fit best?

Current Build:

Processor- Pentium G3258

Motherboard-MSI Intel H81M-E34(DDR3 and LGA1150)

RAM- HyperX FURY 8gb 1866MHz

Graphics Card-MSI GTX 950 (2Gb)

Windows 10 64 bit

Hard Drive-WD Blue 2tb Hard Disk Drive-5400 RPM

Power Supply-EVGA 500 W1

Case- Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-02

Thanks a lot for taking the time to read :)

Since you have a H series motherboard you can't overclock anyways but both CPUs should work, just check the motherboards compatibility list before you buy. Personally I would go with the i7 4790K, or try to find a 4770 non-k because it will give you more longevity out of your current rig assuming you upgrade your graphics card down the road to something like a 1070/80 and you should have a good system for a while.

Wow, that is uhh... scantily clad lol

I would genuinely be concerned about its ability to handle something like a 4790k even without overclocking (which you can't do anyway).

I'm not trolling or shit posting, I am being honest. I think my eyes just got cancer.

Anyways... On topic, I would recommend selling your Intel based system and build a Ryzen system. Also, best buy has a great deal on a 120GB SSD for $49.99... Please pick that up, I pray you are not running off an old 5400rpm HDD.

Remember, Haswell has a FIVR, so even a 3 phase VRM will handle a 4790k just fine.

Hm, that is true.  Well, if it can handle it, that would be the chip to get.  Most powerful one on that socket and even without overclocking it's worth getting the K for higher clockspeed right out of the box.  I still wonder though...

Having just moved from an i5 to an i7 (Skylake platform), I strongly suggest that you get the i7. 4 thread gaming is basically dead now. The difference in performance is immense and the longevity of your system will be greatly increased by going with an i7. I suggest looking for a i7-4770, as you can't overclock on your board and they will be slightly cheaper than an i7-4790K.

Based off of www.cpu-upgrade.com it says all of those are compatible, even the 4790k. BUT i heard quite a few remarks on the poor quality of the motherboard but i'm kind of stuck with it for right now. So what would you recommend out of the following.

i5-4690, i7-4770, or the i7-4790k? And would it be a good idea to get an aftermarket cooler (EVO 212) for any of those or should the stock coolers work fine since i'm not going to be playing super graphically intense games? Thanks for the help again, i think you just recently helped me out on a different topic lol.

There's no question the 4790k is your best option out of that list or any list of compatible CPUs.  At stock speeds, it wouldn't take a whole lot to keep it under control especially just for gaming so an EVO 212 should be fine.  Even the Intel stock cooler will do it if you don't mind it nearing 80 under synthetic loads
