  1. This belongs in the operating systems section
  2. It needs a poll
  3. It needs to say it has a poll
  4. I'm sure there are other threads already existing that are like this
  5. If it is just what we prefer and is therefore all opinion-based, then it actually belongs in the off-topic section
  1. Not really
  2. Not necessary, the OP can chose to post this question in the manner they feel best.
  3. That is suggested but not required.
  4. There is somewhere but more than likely old, posting in it would be considered necroing the topic which is not allowed.
  5. Yes and No but as it is this time its best suited in the Off topic Section.
1 hour ago, Joelsome said:

1 sorry, how do you move threads?

2 make one?

3 it doesn't have a poll so why would I lie

4 does that matter?

5 so which is it? Operating system or off topic. Make your mind up!

  1. You Do not Move Topics, Moderators do.

  3. Does not matter you do not have to include a Poll.

  4. Same as ^^^ above.

  5. This would best be in Off-Topic. - Of which I have moved for you. :P

if we start resurrecting old threads there will be complaining also.

yeah, simple programs work, but most games... nope...

vmware with hardware accelerated low level-acces to gpu would also work. but as far as i'm aware that doesn't exist yet.

Resurrecting Old Threads is known as Necroing, this is of course against the Community Standards.

I use Windows and MacOS on a regular basis. I also dabble with Linux.

I like Ike the concept of Linux quite a bit, but I find the execution is incomplete and it doesn't quite work as right as it should.

Windows is pretty easy to setup, I don't run into much problems, and it's got really good legacy support.

MacOS is my favourite to use. I don't really rank it significantly higher than Windows. While I find it easy and enjoyable to use, and has some pretty useful features, it doesn't have the same software support as Windows.

Honestly I think the OS have gotten good enough that  it's just preference and needs that really determine which OS is better for any given individual.

I prefer Windows -> MacOS -> Linux

I get asked this a lot since I study Computing Science and my answer has always been that I'm the sort of person who wants to have a refined OS, even for development as it's going to be used as a daily driver. I'm doing a Psychology Minor so I need productivity apps like Microsoft Office. I will not compromise for Libre Office which comes preloaded to Ubuntu and many applications on Linux in general don't feel refined at all. I get it since they're all open sourced, but it's not my cup of tea.

MacOS is second as getting it to work on any of my machines have been wildly unsuccessful. I've been using Windows since I was 5, hence why it's still on top.

I still use Ubuntu when I need to. But it's just not going to be used as a daily.

if you have enough ram in our computers, you can just run a Windows vm in linux for office. i get it, not a great solution, but it works for me.

Y'know, software. Like some actually usable video editing software. All Adobe stuff is missing too. Games would be nice too. Game maker is also not on Linux which is a huge drawback for me. Studio One also isn't on Linux and Wine barely works. Love Linux, there's just not enough support. It's getting better though, so hopefully in like five years I might find it usable. Hopefully. Until then I guess I'll be staying on Windows 7.

also id have to give up winamp which i wont do

KDEnlive isn't bad actually, even compared to some of the cheaper commercial options. Honestly if it weren't for games I would personally have no reason to use windows, and I do quite a variety of things on my computers as a hobbyist and student. But of course, it all depends on what you need - if you specifically have to use Adobe software it's harder.

Oh wow, that actually looks solid. I never knew it existed. Back when I tried to switch, Openshot is all I could find and it wasn't much better than Windows Movie Maker. xD

But that still leaves Studio One and Gamemaker, as well as many games I wouldn't be able to get working. Gimp is amazing for image editing, but it still doesn't have page rotating and good pen sensitivity so it's a lot worse than photoshop for drawing. I don't draw, but my brother does and he's in the same boat as me, wants to switch but can't.

If I could get studio one and gamemaker running on Linux, I'd just build a second gaming PC and stream from it with in house streaming on Linux, that'd be amazing and seamless!

How about a virtual machine in Hyper-V?

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

I don't like the performance of virtualisation. You could do it.

Hyper-V is a type-1 hypervisor, it's CPU performance is about as close to metal one can get without using KVM. However, OSX doesn't play nicely (or at all) in Type-1 hypervisors, other than Parallels for Mac.
