GPU Upgrade

Danscu

So I currently have a GTX 960 with 4GB of VRAM. I've been planning to upgrade to a GTX 1060. My question is, is it a worthy upgrade? Also one thing that I'm not sure about is that I would basically be downgrading on the VRAM amount since I would be buying a 3GB model of a 1060. I would really appreciate any thoughts on this topic and I'm also open for other graphics card upgrade suggestions!

Also I need to add: I will be using the GPU for gaming at 1440p.

I really wouldn't see the benefit of buying a 3GB model instead of the 6GB so unless you're upgrading from a really old GPU I don't think it's worthy

Don't go for the 3GB model... Go for the 6GB... If you can stretch a bit further then go for a mid range 1070 card. It will be a much better investment and you'll thank yourself later.

EDIT: I switched from the 3GB to the 6GB model within about a month of having my PC and the 6GB is far better for 1080p, However, like i say, may want to consider a 1070 for 1440p

To add, in raw computing the 1060 3GB variant would win but that 4GB of VRAM on the 960 would come in helpful in high resolution gaming. I'd really refrain from buying a 1060 3GB if you're gonna push 1440p. Opt for the 6GB variant or if you can an 8GB RX 570/580.

I guess I should just hold off for now and upgrade at a later time since I'm on a pretty tight budget.

Keep saving for a 1070 Ti which is a 1080 for 1070 price and would give actual feel-able performance increase.

Also the 3gb 1060 is a lot faster than the 960 by all means and for 1080p you really don't need more than that yet.

Also depends on what you're planning to play at 1440p because you'd have to play some games at lower settings because of the 1GB VRAM less

Duh, when will people start looking at 1060 3gb vs 1060 6gb benchmarks? Even with the extra VRAM and cuda cores, the 6gb just isnt faster than the 3gb by that much to justify the 20% increase in price. In fact, the reason why 1060 3gbs are so cheap for what they offer is that cryptocurrency mining uses way more than 3gb of vRAM, which makes the 3GB as far as gamers can go without competing with miners.

As for vRAM limiting fps, that's just not much of a problem. If it is, how could these 2 cards perform within a 10% margin? the core of the 1060 itself just isnt powerful enough to make 3GB vRAM a serious problem.

unless it's some esports games, a 980ti and 1070 are the minimum for 1440p gaming, and only to about medium to high settings if you still want 60fps. 1070ti/1080 should be what you aim for.
