Kandalf 2.0 Case Mod

bduchch

After deciding to hold onto my gaming pc for another year or so, I decided I would throw a little money at it and mod it.

Its not the fastest pc in the world, but does what I need it to for now.

Hardware Specs:

Core i7 870 @ 3.54GHz

ASUS Sabertooth 55i mobo

8GB Corsair XMS 1600 Memory

MSI Geforce GTX 570

Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler

Corsair Force 120GB SSD

WD 500GB Black 3.5" HDD

Antec 1000W PSU

Original Case:

Thermaltake Kandalf Full Tower

2x Coolermaster silent 120mm fans (1 front, 1 rear)

1x Coolermaster silent 80mm fan

Reasons for upgrade:

Tired of design. Not fond of the top mounted usb/firewire/audio ports. removed plastic shroud off top long time ago.

Airflow sucks.

The front door restricts airflow, and makes it a pain in the ass to move the case. Door was getting wobbly.

Window design sucks.

Plans/Upgrades:

Black Wrinkle Finish

Front mounted I/O (Silverstone USB/Firewire/Audio 3.5" Front Panel)

4x Corsair AF120 Blue LED Fans (2 front, 1 top, 1 rear) Black wire fan grill on top/front fans.

Noctua NF-F12 fans for CPU Cooler

Individually sleeved cables (Cheated and went with extension cables for 24-pin, 8-pin, 6-pin and SATA)

Custom Sleeved front panel cables

BitFenix Alchemy 20cm Blue LED Strip

I already have most of the parts for the upgrade, or have been ordered am waiting for them to come in.

Progress so far:

More progress has been made:

I have decided how I am going to mount my hard drives.

The case originally had 5 1/4" bays from bottom to top with adapters for 3.5" drives. I decided I want something different.

I am swapping out my 3.5" WD Black 500GB for a 2.5" WD Black 500GB and will be mounting that with my SSD on the side of the 5 1/4" bays.

I ordered a Mod Smart cable sleeving kit to custom sleeve some of the cables such as power button and LED's for the front panel. I am also going to make custom Molex cables.

I also decided which feet I am going with.

Gotta love the old cases that still have firewire... Says the guy who has the Corsair 500R... Haha.

I love the paint finish btw, really looking forward to that build.

Yeah Firewire is pretty much useless these days.

The front I/O isnt from the case though, its a silverstone 3.5" one.

  • 3 months later...

Have it back together.

Still have a few things to do, I dont have a side panel built yet, and still a little bit of painting to do, but wanted a computer that wasnt in pieces again.

So I put it together and It will probably stay this way until I get my new system together, then I will finish it.

Trying to upload pictures but most of them are too big, so will have to try to downside and upload later.
