Hey everyone. I just wanted to understand a few issues with my networking setup. Our central modem is based in the kitchen, with two separate Ethernet cables routed under the house and into our separate rooms, which are then plugged into network switches, and then from there further Ethernet cables plugged into PS4, Pc, laptop etc. These last few days, we've noticed constant lag, dropouts, disconnections and not being able to join other players. We've called our network supplier, and they said it could be because of too much strain on the modem itself with most of our Ethernet cables going into over a dozen networking devices.

Short story long, will there be a better connection and less strain if I installed a modem router in both our rooms, which in theory could create a better connection instead of the network switches?? Is this possible?

Details: Our provider is Optus ADSL+2 with home phone line, and the central modem is a Netgear CG3000 V2. If it is possible, to I need a similar network device such as a Netgear modem router or are most modem routers universal with each other? Is there another alternative to this? Our network provider also mentioned upgrading the central modem itself, but that would need to be on my part responsible, finding a compatible modem etc. Please throw any ideas my way.

Thanks

Same thing happened about a year ago with my modem, (only it needed to be completely restarted at least twice a day) basically it's dieing and your isp needs to come out and replace it (time warner cable did it for free). the guy who comes to your house will know what to do

Ask him to install the biggest modem he has, last time i tried that we upgraded from a little NetGear surf board to one something half the size of my printer complete with 2 coax inputs, 4 cat 6 ethernet ports and a backup battery for free because it was considered a hardware failure)

It's the latest model, and any and all future upgrades are not until they release their newer models. I have the option of finding a modem myself though it will take a little work between compatibility and usage.

TWC switched us from a NetGear surfboard to a Technicolor TC8717T and it has been dead reliable ever since.

but we also upgraded from some cheap Dlink router to an asus RT-3200 soo yeah..

Modem router combos are shit. That is your issue. But most DSL modems I have ever seen have a router built in. Most likely it could be slowly dieing, or over heating. If its over heating you can provide active cooling by using a laptop cooler if it has USB ports on it to power the cooler. Other than that, running two modems most likely wont be possible. At least on on the same phone line. You would need a second line installed and I highly dont think the ISP will do that. It also involves most likely paying for two separate internet connections as well.

I would call the provider and ask for a new modem/router, then I would try actively cooling it to help it out a bit. If possible try to buy your own equipment and see about getting a stand alone modem and a router. Not sure if that is possible where you live.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Thank you for so many possible solutions. We have had the modem for a over 5+ years, so It could need a replacement. I will try some of these ideas, thanks Again!

Get a new modem, from them if your on DSL let them provide/Warrenty, but if it's a combo have them run it as a modem only (disable wifi NAT DHCP)  and get your own router,  I have this https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-SafeStream-TL-R470T-throughput-Concurrent/dp/B005SYQBN8  and it's really made the most of my crap internet, plus it's reduced price for the holidays (it's multi Wan but they can be set to Lan, and you with the load balancing you can limit your brothers speed and give your port priority) .  I use a Unifi access point, but TP-Link has this on sale too: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LLAK1UG/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1511665917&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=ac1200+access+point&dpPl=1&dpID=31zM6Fluj2L&ref=plSrch  you could step down to N300 for $30.
