Pc vs Console gaming late 2017

I'm seeing xb1s's for 250 and ps4 pros 350 poping up here and there.

 

I can't even build a brand new comparable pc for those prices.

 

I hope things change early next year. Until then, I might have to rebuy a console and hope for the best.

I don't think so... You can play on Xbox One X in 4k, but it's in price of GPU that you will need to play 4K on your PC...

kind of offtopic, but why do you guys think console makers do not let us use them as PC's? i mean running W10, mouse, keyboard, etc... is it because of piracy? they could still have a closed BIOS no?

Xbox is going to support mouse soon, but not in every game...

With the way the pump out new consoles, you have to spend $350-$400 Every single year to keep up, buy a $1200 computer and you can have it for 5 years. And if you buy 25 games (5 per year) and save $5 per game from cheaper games. And you save $60 per year in online/multiplayer fee.

Windows is Microsoft. Sony wouldn't allow that and neither would Nintendo. They'd have to develop their own software or pay Microsoft an arm and a leg for that.

I never said the xbox one x but on that note I can't play games on my shiny new gtx 1080. Once you add everything else into the equation, that xbox one x looks alot better.

The xbox one came out late 2013. So it'll be 5 years old soon. I'm not sure what you mean but you don't have to buy every console update that releases.

 

When I comes to games, it seems like, gettting 5 great games a year with a few decent games sprinkled in between will be the normal for a while going forward. So you can easily save by buying used or on sale a few months later like steam sales.

 

Ultimately I'm just sad that I can't build a PC for a respectable price anytime soon. I hope next years better.

what do you mean by a "respectable price"? I think PC's are very reasonably priced if you compared them for example to a smartphone. Consoles are cheaper way to play 4k? certainly. If that's what you want go for it. Don't expect to be able to build a new gaming PC for 200$, not now not ever. But a PC does so much more than gaming, keep that in mind, and gives an upgradability path, you do not have to exchange every component to keep it gaming in the future, so keep that in mind also.

 

bottom line if you're just thinking about dollars the choice is easy, buy a console.

The respectable pricing has to do with the fact the key components are over the price ppl originally paid for them at launch and most ppl do not buy smartphones out right but I understand where you're going with that.

It's obvious PC's do more than game. That's why I made sure to specify that in the title.

 

I hope everyone thinks about the dollars and they do thier due diligence before making a purchase but like I said though, I may have to pick up a console for now and see how things shape up early next year.

PCs are more of a hobbyist market.

 

That's like telling a car guy that, you know, prices for mustangs are pretty up there right now, I guess I'll just buy a Nissan Sentra and forget about it.

 

Prices for video cards do stink right now, but you can still build a "console killer" for the cost of an xbox one x.

 

With that said, yeah, the 4 year old PS4 and Xbox One can both be had for cheap and will play games well. However, the PC side of things is more hobbyist.

 

I don't turn on my PS4 and talk about it, I turn on my PS4 to hop into Destiny and play with the boys.

Its not about performance, but about reliability. 

You pick console if you want a gaming platform that just works and you dont want to worry about anything about it, just to play games you like. Believe it or not 26-30 fps games are playable and there are games that goes above it, the graphics may be different than the monster pc has, but only to the degree where developer is putting shiny technologies into the game, most of the games looks pretty much the same, so its not about the graphic aspect anymore. 

Its cheaper to buy a console, and the games prices difference is meaningful, since if you are purchasing the game its either a price drop cheapest or the release date where on both systems the prices are the same. 

Sure you have to pay a sub to the console if you want to play online, but you get a lot of stuff from it, like games on double price drop or game boosters, dlc and stuff like that, all the good things at least on ps plus gives the money back to you anyway. Not to mention free games you are receving, also the subscribtion is not that all expensive, you could get it cheap on black friday or buy cheap from ebay, like 70% of the original price. 

I have bought ps plus 1 year for like 37 pounds i believe, its 3 pounds a month for a subscribtion, which gives me at least 1 decent game a month, thats dirt cheap literally. 

 

And why i choose the console over a pc, even if im not short on cash and could buy a decent rig myself? 

Its all about the stuff you are wasting times and take away the comfort of gaming if your demanding are higher on PC, because you expect to play in perfect 60 fps with all the settings is not the cheap and time saving thing at all. 

I was a PC gamer my whole life and i got sick of it already, each game i had to gradually set up graphic settings if not ingame then in nvidia experience and nvidia panel and so on, to squeze some extra juice out from it. With the PC its the weird feeling when you are playing the game you have it on back of your head thinking you could run this game better, you could get more fps, you could do that and that, and instead of just enjoying the game, you spend a lot of time to figuring out how to play your game better than you are playing now. Should you buy better hardware because you dont want to turn graphics down? Maybe something is wrong with you computer and you need too troubleshoot it each day? Maybe your PSU doesnt handle the task, maybe your GPU got some PCIE connections problem, what kind of OC should you use auto or manual? does your temperatures doesnt throtle my rig? Ecetera ecetera. 

You are telling yourself, naaah its not like that i could play my games on superior platform and enjoy it, then you realize there are a hundreds of thousands of people who are asking the same questions (of which linus is one of them), questioning their rigs, their setting and stuff like that to achieve that legendary "smooth awesome gameplay" you are wondering about how to play like it. 

Aaaand you end up spending five times as much as you would play on console, and wasting the time because you had to do research. 

Life is strange, so at least make it as easy as possible, get a console and just play it, simple as that.

There is no difference between the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro on Bloodborne AFAIK. Bloodborne is incredible. Not having shields forces you to play it pretty aggressively, and the lack of ranged combat adds some difficulty too.

It's 30 fps with substandard frame pacing on both. Same shit happens on console versions of Dark Souls 3.  What I would give to have Bloodborne on PC since DS3 uses the same engine and runs at a locked 60 fps on my PC. The PS4 Slim gpu is somewhere between the HD 7850 and HD 7870, so yeah, a lot weaker than the 1050 Ti. The Pro's gpu is like an RX 470 but it's still hamstrung by the same crap cpu in the regular PS4, though it has something like a 30% overclock which doesn't really make much difference unless you like playing a game at an unsteady 40 fps vs a steady 30 fps. I wouldn't want to play at 30 fps on my monitor but on a TV a few feet away it's reasonable, though 60 fps is still night and day better.

They make it so it's their ecosystem so you pay through their store, pay their online service, and streamline the process.

There's many variables that go into this.

The Xbox One X, as somewhat lackluster its launch was, has more potential than the PS4 Pro simply because Microsoft is actually pushing the hell out of it. Exclusives on both are both good, but that's all on you to make the call on what's the best console in that regard.

Many PC gamers here are PC enthusiasts as well as gamers that enjoy tweaking stuff to get it to work well. Though graphics are only a part of what makes PC gaming great. Access to a library that literally eclipses nearly every console ever made (especially factoring in Emulation), mods (for games like Skyrim, Fallout, etc), being able to pick your control scheme, Not having to rely on Microsoft or Sony servers for online games, movies and music streaming services (Can't even stream Spotify or Netflix on PS3 if a system update is required).

 

My primary reason for pc gaming is the absurd flexibility it offers and the control I can exercise over it, not necessarily the graphics potential.

What exclusives on the XBox One? If not counting PC releases, it's Gears of War, Halo, and Forza? That's a pretty thin lineup compared to PS4 console exclusives like Uncharted, Bloodborne, The Last of Us, Horizon, God of War, Persona, NieR Automata, Yakuza, Nioh, and Gran Turismo. I don't see what potential it has. XBox One X seems like it's in a no man's land of not having good exclusives like PS4 and not having the power of a decent gaming PC.

With high customization and milions of options there comes some things that doesnt make your gaming experience better, especially in online gaming against other people. 

They have ability to cheat, using bots all the way, a lot of pc games are being ruined by cheaters, gta 5 on PC online is literally unplayable, because the amount of modders thats just blow you up if you are going on expensive mission with lets say cargo, you spend 400k on collecting the cargo and tons of time, make a mission and realize you and your cargo being blown up by the modder is not a pain in the ass but the knife into the spine. 

It happen to me several times i gave up on gta 5 on pc, and thats sad because the game delivers truly superior online experience, with new content being introduced all the time, the game is a really big deal. 

There are hundreds of mmorpg with ruined economies, where without buying gold on third party services you are not able to progress correctly like in elder scrolls online, the stuff you basically should farm it for 15 hours is dirt cheap due to the botters invading that game in thousands. 

Mods are fine, but not all of them, you could break your game and save by installing a certain mod, it happen to me with skyrim several times, you should have seen my face when i killed my 70 level dark elf with a texture enchance mod, this is super cheesy. I played EU IV, i had a raw no mod save with 200 years long gameplay, i installed the mod for the development, and the save was ruined, even after unistalling the mod, so... 

I know the library of games is bigger, especially mmorpg and strategies i still play on my laptop, but thats all. Actually there is not more any big game that is not being released on consoles and even mmorpg are trying their best on other platforms than PC, and that trend will continue to evolve. 

There are just enough games on consoles to play on them, you dont need 10k indie games, you will not have enough time to play it anyway, the day is only 24 hours. 

Instead you will be playing more bigger games on consoles and you will not be bored, since price drops are really juicy last days on consoles i bought FF VX, dragon age, gta 5, watch dogs and i cant find a time to play them, believe me. 

The big library is not a game breaking deal, but the set of mind telling you, you could play literally any game you want (if its released on console) is one of that. You dont have to worry about if that game will run or not, if you are getting 30 fps at least or not, just buy, install and enjoy, thats a game breaker for me (and old pc gamer) at least.

If you were to take a look at my Steam library, you'd find that there isn't even enough games to have to scroll through. Though they vary very greatly in age. I don't tend to play modern AAA titles very much, the most demanding game I own being 2013 Tomb Raider (though Witcher 3 from GoG may soon supersede that). I actually recently did a run through of Final Fantasy XII in PCSX2 (Playstation 2 emulator) with the game running at 2560 x 1440, something that only cost me $20 ten years ago as I only needed to copy the .iso of my own disc onto the PC, rather than buying the same thing in remastered form at a higher price. Good luck finding an HD remaster of lesser known games such as Eternal Darkness (Gamecube). Dolphin does wonders for that particular gem. My multiplayer presence is currently non-existent.

 

The point being I don't buy games very often, I pick and choose what I feel like playing rather than chasing the latest and most hyped. Beyond the random exclusive like Persona, there isn't much in the way of experiences on the PS4 or Xbox One that interests me that I couldn't already get (officially or otherwise) on PC. It doesn't sense for me, objectively or financially, to tie myself into the PSN or Live ecosystem. My random gaming habits simply don't warrant purchasing either of the consoles.

 

On a final note, I've been playing Skyrim on a tablet long before the game was ever announced for the Switch. Granted, mods were used to bring visuals below minimum settings for the Intel Atom to handle, but it was still fun nonetheless.

Steam sells old games that doesnt work on the modern pc at all, i had experience with many games. 

Disciples series, age of wonders, sacrifice, sudden strike, total anihilation, spell force, gothic series etc, a lot of the old games just didnt work at all or needed community patches. 

Its not like PC has 100% backward compatibility... 

The lesser known games most often just does not work on modern PC with windows 10 AT ALL...  even with the windows xp compatible mode and etc.

I was the same as you before i got my console, i was playing my games and never often bought any new ones, it changed when i got a console and ability to play anything i wanted. 

I went in the opposite direction actually. I used to play almost solely on consoles up until around the end of the PS2/GC generation. I had a PS3 when that was big, but I wasn't particularly interested in using it much. I played more games on my slow laptops (Intel GMA 4500MHD, and then a Radeon 5470 shortly after) than I ever did on the PS3, though to be fair, my Nintendo 3DS did get some play time in too. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I built a desktop. My PS2 is still alive, and the PS3 is pretty much a living room media box (unless it decides it needs an update, usually at the least opportune of times), but I can't say I really missed relying on consoles for gaming.
