Sell 32gb of slow DDR4 for 16gb of fast ram?

Gdourado

Hello, how are you?

Recently I got an upgrade bundle.
The price was sweet so I jumped on it.
The thing is that it came with some slow memory.
It came with a dual channel 32gb Crucial Ballistix Sport LT ram at 2400 Cl16.

After some fine-tuning I am now running that memory at 3000 with CL17-18-18-40.
I doesn't seem that I can push it any higher.
Since I have tuned it to these spec, both my firestrike, timespy and far cry primal benchmarks went up from the stock 2400 Cl16.

But now I am at a crossroad.
I keep hearing that for gaming ram speed and latency matter quite a lot.
So, with current ram prices, I can sell my kit and then get a 3600 cl16 kit of Samsung b-dies but only at 16gb.

On the other hand, I keep thinking that 32gb might be more future proof looking forward.
So I am torn.

What is your opinion?
Should I sell my 32gb and get a faster 16gb kit?

Would it really make a difference in gaming?

Thanks.
Cheers

like 5-10 frames, not worth it imo, sell the kit for  large amount and then buy 16 gb

Keep that 32GB kit, the speed is just fine for most task, and 3600 is overkill anyway.

Who told you this? Ram matters almost none when gaming except with a Ryzen CPu then I doubt you would be able to run it at advertised speeds.

As others have said, keep the 32gb kit.

I saw some digital foundry videos comparing ram speed and faster ram Gabe better performance in gaming.

There is also some videos by mindblank where he uses low latency ram with a 7700k with good results.

I am currently on Intel, as the bundle came with a 6700k.

This article compares ddr4 3000 vs 2133 on stock and overclocked 7700k:

Beyond 3000-3200 you start hitting diminishing returns. So nah, 3000->3600 is not worth it.

How about the latency?

I am running 3000, but with very high timmings.

What kind of gaming gains would I see with lowered timmings?

When I first built the system, I used the stock 2400 cl16, then 2666 cl16, then 3000 cl17.

In each step, I saw gains in 3d mark and far cry primal that is a cpu bound game.

Cheers

What do you do that warrants 32GB?

I'd just get a fast af kit anyway. Fast RAM for games would do more good than more RAM.

It's a gaming machine only.

I just got the 32gb as I picked up a used bundle with the 6700k, board and that memory for a sweet price.

Today I saw that I have the option of switching at no cost from my Ballistix kit to a GSkill F4-3200C16D-32GVK kit.
It is also a 32gb kit and it runs at 3200 CL16-18-18-38.

Now, if it runs on my board at those settings, it is an improvement from my current 3000 CL17-18-18-40. And I would keep 32 gigs at no cost.
From what I can tell, this Gskill kit uses Hynix ram.
Is this a good option?
Or is it still better to go for a 3200 CL14-14-14-34 of Samsung B-Die?
