7800x or 7700k for streaming upgrade?

Hi there,

Title basically says it all, I want to upgrade my rig to handle streaming a bit better.  Currently running an i5 4670k and a GTX 970.

It's a fine build but I'm forced into using NVENC encoding because my CPU can't handle x264 and games.

My issue is I don't know whether it's worth dropping the money on a 7800x, x299 mobo, ddr4 ram and a new cooler for big money or upgrading to the slightly older 7700k for a bit cheaper.

Main question is,

is the 7800x likely to give me a much better streaming experience because of the 6 cores or is the addition of hyperthreading and a faster clock with the 7700k going to be enough for 1080/30 streaming?

Also, is the future proofing that comes with x299 worth it and is there a chance we'll see some black friday/cyber monday deals?

Upgrading to a 7700k from the i5 seems like a lot of money for not much performance but maybe i'm wrong

Cheers

7th are only quad cores. They dont stream well either. 7800x performs better, but 8th gen kills it clean. I'd say a 6-core 8th gen CPU (depends on how far your budget can bring you) or Ryzen 5 1600.

Why not the i7 8700k? the i7 7800x hasn't good performance on gaming, even a Ryzen 7 1700 would be wiser to go with.

I'd say I'd want to spend like a maximum of 800GBP but it could always be stretched if needs be!  Is ryzen really performing?  I've been verryyyy out of the loop this last while

I had looked at the 8700k, only reason I was looking at the 7800x was because it was cheap-ish bundled with a motherboard.

Is the 8700k the one to beat in that case?

The i7 7700k already outperformed the i7 7800x at gaming only, the i7 8700k is a polished i7 7700k with extra 2 cores, so it will game with better performance yet also provide good quality streaming as it has 6c/12t all the same.

x299 uses a different form of cache that has been known to harm gaming performance.

8700k if you're definitely going Intel, but you should also consider a 1700.  8 cores, 16 threads.  Your gaming performance won't be as good, but you'll have less stress from streaming.  Of the two, the 8700k is better.  Stock is short and cost is high though.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

Neither. The i7 8700 or 8700k (either is fine) are much better choices for streaming. If that's too expensive get a Ryzen 7 1700 on a  $180 X370 board, use the included Wraith Spire RGB cooler and overclock it to 3.7ghz on stock voltages, then be happy. It's not quite as fast as the Intel's in gaming, but it will still push over 60FPS in all current games, and it'll stream like a beast.

Neither, especially the 7700k, which is a complete rip off. Go for a Ryzen 1700 or above instead for streaming. This helps explain why:

Thanks for the response guys, if I can stretch my budget to get an 8700k I'll end up doing that, if not the ryzen 1700 looks like a pretty great deal for what it is!

Cheers for the help

7700k? Rather get 8600k then since it will bring you better performance for less price than 7700k.

But for streaming and gaming I would concider 8700k if I were you. The only problem with this CPU is overheating.
