I think Reaper may be the reason... CGminer is sometimes a pain, but never eats much memory. (How do you make an IT guy cry? "Vista")

And how do you make them go insane - Windows ME

vista is all I had... didnt feel like setting up linux xD im so lazy. CGminer just wont launch... never could figure out why.

I'm in the same boat, Vista and CGminer keeps crashing. I'm hoping it's not Vista.

I use Reaper. Reaper is using it all. cgminer doesnt launch for me... maybe its because Im using vista in my mining rig... i dont know. but reaper uses all me memory.

Don't make recommendations based on your crappy mining program. Reaper uses a ton of memory, based on the amount of memory on the card. Any new mining rig should be running cgminer and this will be irrelevant.

Just use any cheap 4gb stick of memory and feel free to use a small ssd. The faster speed during installation will be worth the small price difference.

Questions
1- With this mobo can I run 5 GPUs (2 off of 16x lanes and 3 off of the 3 1x lanes) ?
2- Is there any PSU that has 11 pcie 6+2 connectors (minimum) that is not the Rosewill hercules 1600W and that can withstand 5 R9 280x?

edit : I guess I can always use a 2x Molex to 6+2 pcie adapter if I don't have enough pcie connectors.
Spoiler

1- You need to research the individual motherboard and read the manual for it. Some motherboards will disable adjacent PCI slots if the one above is used. Just because a motherboard offers all expansion slots, doesn't mean you can populate them. They may offer 6 slots, but only allow 3 to be used at a single time.

2- I'd suggest using multiple lower capacity, but just as high efficiency for powering many GPU's. You might also consider molex to 6+2 pin adapter to power your various GPU's using 4 pin molex.

When selecting your risers, make sure you use powered risers, non powered can stress the motherboard and burn it out.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Get 2 decent wattage PSU's and read how to wire them together.

 • 2 PCI Express gen2 x16 slots- PCI_E2 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E5 is empty) or PCIe x8 speed (when PCI_E5 is installed)- PCI_E5 supports up to PCIE x8 speed• 3 PCIE 2.0 x1 slots

Don't see that they shouldn't... but NO promises.

Any trustworthy link ? All I find is forum threads dating 10 years back. Basically is it only the short circuiting of the ground connection on the power supply that's unplugged to the motherboard?

You could use something like this. http://www.hashratestore.com/shop/cables/dual-power-supply-adapter-cable-24-pin-atx/

Main rig: i7 3770K @ 4.54, Sapphire R9 290, Sabertooth Z77, 16 GB Mushkin Redline 2133, Lian Li PC-P50R, Seasonic 860xp Platinum, Kingston Hyper X 3K 240GB

freeNAS server: AMD Athlon II 170u 20W, 5 x 3TB WD Red in raid-z1 (12 TB)

media centre: AMD A10-5700, crucial M4 (boot), running XBMC,4 x 3TB WD Red, 3 x 3TB WD green + 2TB green in FlexRAID (17 TB)

So its a 2x 20+4 pin to a 20+4 pin ?

You don't need to wire them together. You can use a paperclip to turn on the second power supply without a motherboard, or power switch.

Here is what I bought :

CPU:  AMD A4-4000 3.0GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($46.50 @ Vuugo)
Motherboard:  MSI FM2-A85XA-G43 ATX FM2 Motherboard  ($82.00 @ Vuugo)
Memory:  G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($79.24 @ DirectCanada)
Total: $367.72
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

X2 for PSU
X2 for overall ( I bought 2 rigs of mobo, apu, ram and 2 psus)

I chose mobo because it was pretty much the only one available on newegg.CA
I chose APU because it was cheapest in mobo's supported list
I chose Ram because it was the cheapest in mobo's supported list that's IN STOCK
I chose 2xPSU to run 5 GPUs (per 2 psus)

I already have the HDDs.
I already have 6x molex powered risers 1x to 16x
I already have 4x Sapphire R9 280X Dual-x and 1x Sapphire 7970 Vapor-x.

I'm still hunting for used 7970s/r9 280xs.
I will buy 4 molex powered risers 16x to 16x.

Question :
- Can I run r9 290s, r9 290xs with my 7970/280xs ?

To short the Psu's, connect them all then hit the power on the motherboard and the switch at the back of the other shorted Psu's at the same time :)

hum... no.. I just connect one to each mobo and short circuit the other 2. Then I switch them all on, then power on my mobos. I don't see why I have to time the switch of the shorted ones like some kind of trick shot.
