Can I get away with a fanless build?

Dallon426

I've been looking at some cases.  Streacom fanless chasis.

I've got an

ASROCK Z270 GAMING ITX/AC

I7 7700k

16GB CORSAIR DDR4

1 ssd

1 hd 3.5 (this can be turned external)

I use USB to power midi instruments and that's pretty much it

Soundcard is a motion 828x using thunderbolt

Graphics is on the cpu as I'm no gamer

I'm a music producer and record in real-time and use vst instruments

I've been looking for an ultra portable sff PC that is a powerful lil beast.

Will my system run too hot?

Will an external brick PSU be sufficient as well?

I saw a video of a guy running a nuc fully expanded and it was a solid machine.  However I don't think the cpu in a nuc will be strong enough for my needs.  Maybe I'm incorrect in that assumption though.

Any ideas/advice is great.  Thanks

You would need to get the biggest tower heatsink you can. nhd15. Id recommend underclocking aswell.

If you want fanless and mildly overclocked, you'll need a large cuboid air cooler.

How would a PSU exhaust if it doesn't have a fan?

dude i don't know why you would'nt want fans, just get some silent ones and limit their rpm to wathever level of noise you can tolerate, even a fan running at 200 rpm will be way better than none.

THere are psu that have no fan. You just have to have it facingup with the grill. Corsair rm line I believe is fanless and Be Quiet ones as well

I think a NUC may work.

This NUC has a 6770HQ.With a CPUB score of 9703 (compared to the 7700k's 12,112).

I think a NUC may be a valid choice.

Yes, there are many PSUs that don't have fans; however, there's no way to use one as an exhaust (compared to an open side-panel or grill).

Could you make a viable setup that was fanless yes, should you no. It would cost you significantly more and would be fat and heavy as hell

I was looking into PSUs and I didn't even know these existed.

Also these as well

I just figured get a fast CPU so I can do all the things I want without any problems.  I have been learning a bit as I'm going and I think something small like a nuc is perfect or using other very small cases. Such as this

I would think you're better off with a NUC for your usecase.

    Intel Xeon E5 2695 V3 14c-28t @ 2,8GHz
  • Motherboard
    AsRock X99 mITX
  • RAM

  • Intel SSD DC S3600 800GB

That CPU is something I wouldn't want in such usecase. It really needs beefy cooler.

Don't use a 7700k, that will be complete overkill if all you are doing is midi things.

Also I think it would be a good idea to get a older graphics card or a fan less one that sips power like a GTX 1030 or a used 750TI even if you are not a gamer. I saw that you had a ITX motherboard so I assume you have a small case so a large heatsink is not a option for you. A intel NUC should be more than enough if all you are doing is audio things.

Please don't argue with me, I am just trying to help, or be helped. (we are all humans right?)

I'm not doing only midi recordings.  I am also doing multi track recordings as well (with Audio in realtime)

For a passive cooler, I'd recommend the Thermalright Grand Le Macho fanless.

That won't work for a SFF
