How do i force windows to run a game on integrated graphics? I could do that on my laptop and switch between intel hd graphics and the nvidia gpu but the option seems to be missing on my desktop pc in the nvidia control panel. 

 

I would appreciate any help!

 

PS: I foud the option but it only shows my gtx 1080 ti not my Intel HD graphics

You have to connect your video cable on the motherboard, it is impossible to use the iGPU for video output with your cable connected solely to the dedicated graphics card.

if your cpu has a integrated gpu you have to enable it from your bios and then install the drivers for it

You need to have the monitor connected to the motherboard. Might be annoying but at least that way you can be sure the iGPU takes care of whatever is on the monitor.

i have some questions on this ... i always thought that, on desktop PCs, the GPU a monitor is connected to also handles everything this monitor is displaying. like, everything. 

 

if you happen to have two monitors, one connected to the dGPU and the other one hooked up to the iGPU (like i do) - then a game should always use the GPU that the monitor displaying the game is connected to - that was what i thought.

 

well, yesterday, i was running minecraft with shaders and hi res textures loaded in windowed mode and dragging the game window from one monitor to the other seemed to make no difference.

 

how does that work ? i expected a fps drop or game crash but nada ... just a short 10-15 fps dip for a second after moving the window ... but after that, fps went straight back to where they always were. 

 

there is no way a haswell i5's integrated gpu is beefy enough to run minecraft with a hefty shader pack at the same FPS as my 1050 ti. (vanilla minecraft maybe, but the intel HD would have choked on all the reflections and lights and godrays and whatever else this shaderpack has going on) 

 

does that mean that, when i move the game over to the monitor connected to the mainboard, the 1050ti is still rendering the game but instead of sending the output straight to its own monitor, the card is sending the finished frames over to the igpu to display on that monitor ?

That's because DX/OpenGL can't switch which GPU is used on the fly. Try the same idea with a video, with that you should see the load switching between GPU's.

Also it's surprising there was almost no difference, i have tried the same thing with AAA games and saw a performance hit when i switched monitors, the dGPU kept doing the rendering and stuff but the fact the output had to go from the dGPU to the iGPU and then to the monitor did hurt performance.

 

Basically, try the same with another game and a video, results should be different.

yeah ... that's why i expected the game to crash or have other issues when moved to another monitor like that

maybe something was different aside from FPS - a little more input lag maybe? i did not feel a difference tho. but i am not very sensitive to input lag and fps changes on most games i play. 

 

i usually don't do competitive split second stuff

Btw, if you have 2 monitors, each connected to their own display, why don't select the monitor that's connected to the iGPU as main monitor? Games usually run on the GPU where the main monitor is connected to so you can easily swap between the iGPU and dGPU for games.

usually, i want to run my games on the 1050 ti, i just discovered this by chance and wonder what's behind it. 

 

i could have connected both monitors to the dGPU but i have the intel GPU in my system anyways because it's part of the CPU, so i thought i should not let it sit around doing nothing.
