980TI SLI or Vega 64

I have the option to get Vega 64 or 980Ti sli. Which one is better?

Yeah, you will have no issues then, that's a great PSU!

A single 980Ti = 1070 roughly, which is just behind the V64 in most benchmarks. 

 

So even if SLI is shit for a certain game, you'll still get good performance from the single card.

yeah but then i don't see the point on wasting money on SLI. because that's really what it is in 90% of cases. you don't gain anything, even when it works it gives you stutters and crap. it's just plainly not worth it. and they're cutting support for it almost completely....

That's a very antiquated way to look at SLI. 

 

Look up videos, see setups working, experiment with Nvidia Inspector. 

 

SLI is never plug and play, but when it works it works quite well.

not from what I've seen in real life. and i kinda have a biased towards believing that more than what i can gather online

If you're doing other stuff that can utilize the dual GPUs aside from gaming (or have a high hz monitor), go for the SLI 980s. Otherwise, a single one would do quite well for 90% of games.

Depends on your budget. 980tis would rek a Vega easy, but would be much more expensive

...is testament to the assumption. What you're complaining about is abnormal behavior for multi GPU systems. You shouldn't be getting "stutters and crap", and you should see some sort of scaling more than 10% of the time. The fact that this is your "experience on more than one occasion" either means the systems you worked on were faulty, or PEBKAC, and I would rather assume the former.

it's abnormal because it's unwanted and suboptimal but in practice it's fairly common so it's not abnormal

I did laugh on how Vega was a "failure" in a way... took AMD 3 years to finally equal themselves with the V64 to what nVidia brought way back on the GTX TITAN X Maxwell.

Unless you're a video editor or content creator, the Nvidias all day long.  Vega is, unfortunately, a bit of a stillborn fetus.  Took AMD years to come out with a card that doesn't quite match Nvidia's Pascal chips.  Meanwhile Nvidia is already sitting on Volta.
