Best gaming monitor 2006

I'm doing a period specific build around the 8800 gtx, and want to get a period specific monitor.

As a little refresher, the 8800 gtx was released November 2006.

If you had $1000 in hand to go and spend on a monitor in Q3 2006 - Q3 2007, what did you buy?

Trying to find forum posts back then is spotty, and YouTube reviews didn't exist. There seemed to be this great CRT vs LCD debate going on, as well as widescreen (which was 16:10 back then, at all sorts of weird resolutions like 1920x1200 and 1680x1050) vs 4:3 (1600x1200). LCDs were the choice of ballers, but I couldn't find any indication of a real winner within that class.

I'm too young to know by experience, I was playing Oblivion on the 360 back then at 7 years old, I didn't even know PC's could play video games.

If it were me, I'd probably stick with a 1600x1200 CRT. Shipping can be majorly pricey but compared to period LCDs the picture, refresh rate, and input lag are superior.

And 16:10 was common for quite a while with a lot of PC users still preferring the aspect since. I only very recently replaced my 1920x1200 and still have a 1680x1050 on my desk. MacBooks and some other more "pro" laptops stuck with 16:10 for a long time too at 1280x800 and 1440x900 being common resolutions. Man I wish there was more of a market for 4k-5k 16:10 monitors.
