Looking for a new Graphics card

bman7842

I'm currently in the market for a new graphics card and would like your recommendations. I will be pairing this gpu with my Intel Core i5 6600 so obviously I want a nicer card but not one that would be bottle necked by the cpu. I plan on mainly 1080p (possibly 1440p in future) gaming on mostly AAA titles along with some less demanding games, things like The Witcher 3 which my current 750ti hits around 30fps on highish settings. I have been looking at the GTX 1060 (6gb variation) and honestly this device is probably the highest I would go in price so my budget is around ($300 being my highest but $200 being my lowest). I have been busy with school at times so I haven't been doing a good job at keeping up with the graphics card market so I don't know what big new things are being released. I also don't know if now is a good time to buy one either since I have read about price increasing due to the high demand of graphics cards in mining rigs. So basically I want to know what a good graphics card in the $200-300 price range would be and whether or not my cpu would not bottleneck it but also whether or not I should buy it now or what until prices drop or a new release comes.

Also on a side note, since I have a bit more $$$ at this point in my life I was looking towards working on more cosmetic things of my build (obviously second hand of course) but I was wondering if I could get any suggestions on some itx or matx cases. I am a more small form factor guy as I own a mATX mobo but it's in a ATX case and it just looks out of place. I want a smaller PC that doesn't take up much space. I have been looking at the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv but the new Enthoo Shift itx has really made me interested in the itx form factor. This isn't as important to me as the GPU but would love to hear your thoughts on the two.

I'm not much of a AMD kind of guy,  so I would not be able to speak on behalf of any of their cards.

However,  If you're looking for cost / performance  and with 1080p gaming,  you can get a 1050ti for around 150 on sale.

Otherwise your next best is either a used GTX 970, or a new 1060.

Yeah I'm more of a Nvidia guy myself (I prefer the software that comes with the cards), I was considering going back a generation but also heard that current gen cards have much better power efficiency than old cards. Also I don't know if I want to go as low as a 1050ti  just for upgrade-ability but I also don't know if a 1060 would be to high? If you think the cpu could keep up with the 1060 then I'm down with it.

I too am a big fan of mATX and ITX form factor, it is a lot more practicle and 80% of custom PC builders don't even use all the extra slots that come on an ATX motherboard. Phanteks makes the Evolv ITX and mATX cases that are very nice, but I am leaning towards the Fractal Design Define C TG as the all-around best mATX case available right now.

That being said a GTX 1060 6GB is absolutely your best bet, they will do awesome in 1080p gaming and very good at 1440p as well!

If you want to do 1440p, go for a gtx 1070/Vega 56. If you want 1080p, go for a 6gb GTX 1060 or an RX 580 8gb.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

The Enthoo evolv matx is really nice, tempered glass, quality aluminium and support for large gpus, cpu coolers and several radiators while not being too expensive.

The airflow is only alright though because of the solid front panel, so for sli youd have to plan the airflow carefully. That doesnt much matter with a 1060 though.
