Netflix, HD vs SD [RESOLVED]

Go to solution Solved by vanished,

@pxnguinPr3 please select one of the posts as "best answer" rather than just changing the title of the thread

Hello good people of LTT,

Before we start,

I know what SD and HD are, 1080 is full, my ipad can do 1440p (my main consumption device)

Now we've got that out the way,

I've done a trial of netflix on the middile plan, the 2 screen HD one.

Im going to buy it,

I only use one screen, So my question here is;

Is it worth buying the extra how many pixels there are,

how much difference there?

What does Netflix define as SD?
I mainly watch star trek voyager, Discovery and TNG, occasionally some other shows, do i need it?

Whats your thoughts people!

Thanks!

Hi.

HD to them is 720p or higher.

Quote

The minimum connection speed for SD quality is 0.5 Mbps; however, we recommend a faster connection for improved video quality. A download speed of at least 5.0 Mbps per stream is recommended to receive HD content (defined as a resolution of 720p or higher). A download speed of at least 25.0 Mbps per stream is recommended to receive Ultra HD (defined as a resolution of 1080p or higher) and HDR content. You are responsible for all Internet access charges. Please check with your Internet provider for information on possible Internet data usage charges. The time it takes to begin watching Netflix content will vary based on a number of factors, including your location, available bandwidth at the time, the content you have selected and the configuration of your Netflix ready device.

I don't see any mention of what kind of resolution you will get in the SD package.

Generally, SD is sub-720p. Here is a nice guide:

Technically:

SD = <720p

HD = 720p

Full HD = 1080p

Ultra HD = 2K

4K = 4K

Since I am to lazy to put something interesting here, I will put everything, but slightly abbreviated. Here is everything:

42

also, some questions to make you wonder about life:

What is I and who is me? Who is you? Which armrest in the movie theatre is yours?

also,

Welcome to the internet, I will be your guide. Or something.

My build:

CPU: Intel Core i5-7400 3.0GHz Quad-Core Processor,

 Motherboard: ASRock B250M Pro4 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard,

Memory: Corsair 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory,

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive,

Video Card: MSI Radeon RX 480 4GB ARMOR OC Video Card,

Case: Corsair 100R ATX Mid Tower Case ,

Power Supply: Corsair CXM 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply,

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home Full,

Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WN725N USB 2.0 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter, Case Fan: Corsair Air Series White 2 pack 52.2 CFM  120mm Fan

SD would refer to 640x480, which is a 4:3 aspect ratio.

I doubt they will actually serve all their content like this, as most stuff is either recorded at 16:9 or 21:9.

It could also be them saying you will get stuff in up to 720p, but with a shit bitrate.

But this stuff is not really set in stone and any company just states whatever is the juiciest on their ad campaign.

It could also be 576i since old PAL had that many lines and there's a 16:9 version of it. Still, there's no point imho having the lowest Netflix plan. Since it does work on two devices simultaneously you can just share it with someone else.

SD is 720 x 480. Essentially DVD resolution with better quality due to compression.

Wasn't DVD up to 576p or something like that?  Where did that number in my head come from?  I know Wii can output at that...

You are correct for countries that do not use the NTSC television standard. PAL and SECAM standards do use 720 x 576P resolutions for DVD. NTSC standard for DVD is 720 x 480.

Game consoles can also output those resolutions, depending on the region sold, as well as the connectors (SCART, Component) and tv set used. Of course, the extra resolution may or may not be utilized by developers.

I am really glad more universal standards are used now btw.

My first 50" plasma was 1080i and I swear it looked better then the 60" 1080p I replaced it with. Just saying, anyway still seeing the 1080sd when I hit info while watching Netflix but it looks hd to me.
