What is the best windows software for gaming?

In practice, there's going to be little practical difference between Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 for gaming - aside from DirectX12 support (if needed).

I personally can deal with the quirks of Windows 10 and therefore would suggest that, since it's getting the newest features, etc. But if you personally don't like Windows 10, I would suggest Windows 8.1 + Classic Shell Start Menu as a great alternative. It gives you a similar UI as Windows 7, but you're getting the newer Windows Kernel and lots of feature Updates (Seriously, the improved File Transfer utility is one of the best parts of Windows 8.1 over Windows 7).

okay so either you are a very old guy and you refer to "windows software" as a program which layers on top of the kernell to show the gui. This is the name microsoft windows later adapted for their gui based operating system.

Or you are refering to which operating system is best.

Or you are refering to which program which runs on windows works best with gaming.

Either way without giving more details about which games and which requirements you have we can't give you an answer.

Do you mean what is the best version of Windows, or what is the best software to use for downloadable games?

there are really two answers i can see here and they are:

windows 10 if we are talking operating systems as the title would imply

Steam if we are talking about places to download, collect and discuss games

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

it first said "best windows software".

Still to determine which version of windows works best for you we would need to know the specs of your machine and which games you want to play.

What I mean is what is best for gaming. Windows 7, 8 or 10

Make sure to fully update to Windows 8.1. Windows 8 is no longer supported at all and does not get security patches. Plus 8.1 added a lot of quality of life improvements.

When people say Windows 8 sucks, they mean two things:

1. Modern UI interface (Classic Shell Start Menu fixes that)

2. Buggy system (Windows 8.1 fixes that)

What kind of games are we talking about?
windows 7 and 8(.1) are general purpose OS's which will just work fine, you can tweak them to get a bit more performance out of them.
From what i've seen windows 10 seems to be a bit less resource heavy when running applications which go fullscreen, but this could be system dependend.
Also the new upcoming version of windows 10 says it improves on the gaming mode in windows 10. this mode shuts down things which aren't needed during gaming to deliver more performance, this is something which can be achieved in other versions of windows, but only by tweaking a lot yourself.
Juding by the way you ask these questions I'd say you want to go with windows 10 because it would require less tweaking by yourself and less configuration to get optimal performance. Just enabling game mode would give you best performance (for a windows machine).
There are multiple versions of windows 10 if you scroll down in this article it shows a table of avaible features in the different version.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_editions
Features like Bitlocker and domain join might be points you want to look into to determine if you want home or pro.
If cost is an issue then you want to go for home unless there are requirements you haven't stated here which are only avaible in pro (or entrerprise)

True... but you should buy it.

I'll give that there are some people who, because of various circumstances cannot afford to buy Windows, but by and large, most people should still buy it, if they couldn't take advantage of the free upgrade during the first year.
