they should have the same resolution, otherwise you will have to use the lower one on both

That's not true, you can use a 4k monitor and a 1080p monitor, and the 4k will still run at 4k.

if i use 2 different monitors one for gaming and one for general use such as discord will this work if so how would i set it up

You should be able to control it through the NVidia control panel, or AMD's equivalent, and it should work regardless of resolution. I'm not too sure about different refresh rates though.

Just connect the monitors, set the 144 hz one to 144 hz in Nvidia or amd drivers, and then just put discord and stuff on the other monitors. It's literally dragging and dropping windows.

quick question are all hdd compatible with any setup

Any HDD with a sata connection (aka hdd from the last 15 years) will work.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Any monitors can be used side by side with different resolutions and settings. You will need to set them to expand the desktop rather than mirror. I use three to four monitors and none of them are the same size or resolution.
