windows has brokeneded itself again

I am having two main issues at the moment, and one other poped up and seams to of went away now

1) the start menu search has brokeneded itself  and won't work, by that I mean I can't open it, or search with it, which is being a massive pain

2) Mail isn't working, it opens goes pale, then after 10s-40s crashes and closes, this is a massive pain for obvious reasons

 

The other issue which appeared was that when I locked windows instead of seeing a lock screen I just saw a blue screen, and when I tried to log back in wouldn't show the log in bar, it fixed itself within an hour, but it was an issue I was having. So how fucked is my PC, I am guessing the advice I am going to be getting here is reinstall windows, but is there a way for me not too, as just sounds annoying as I would need to find a USB stick to make a boot drive for this purpose.

you could do a windows refresh, its still kind of a reinstall just a little faster

Well, if you reinstall windows now you'll be able to use the PC again later today!

 

However, for the your 2 issues noted, does it fix itself for a bit after restarting the pc?

Step 1: Kill your computer to death with a hammer and then kill it again.

2: Rant and rave on Twitter about how terrible Windows is

3: get new PC parts and make a new computer

4: reinstall Windows so you can play games, and macOS for everything else because it's much less frustrating

5: be happy

 

6: Unless installing macOS doesn't work or is too frustrating, in which case refer to step 1.

I love this plan, apart from I didn't have the moneyz for a new computer. So can't do it,

If I was going going to that I might as well just reinstall windows (I am waiting for my NAS to be set up so data loss isn't a thing, as that has taken all night for a format of the 3 drives. but till then yea, I can't)

nope, tried that, I also tried just restarting the search and mail functions but that didn't work either so yea, in a bit of a pickle at the moment

I will have ze moneyz at the end of the month at which point I am building a new one and getting a reasonable laptop which should be much better, but till then I need this PC

Hehe. But no Windows games run properly on Linux... otherwise I'd be using that.

Have you tried linux games on linux? They exist! But they are as rare as a real gamer girl but hey, it's worth the search!

I will be going linux on this machine at the end of the money, after it's not my main PC and is a secondary one which isn't my main one, as for win 7, yes I agree it was better than win 10, but I am using 10 cause I'm strange and it in many ways is easier

If you go back far enough you can run them in an XP vm and then it doesn't matter what the host OS is, mac, linux, windows or more pro-grade stuff like unraid, vmware esxi, just pick one!

You can always get a decent usb drive or a random harddrive or whatever and run linux from that (ubuntu, linux mint, whatever you want) in live-usb form or just fully installed. If you need e-mail and W10 decides to do a big turd you can still access it

 

About the start menu issue, what about getting something like classic start? Solves the issue!

Nah at the end of the month the PC will not be in use as my main PC anymore so I can with little issue install linux on it and have some fun with it, as for mail I can access it through chrome but yea, it's just a pain, I will be fixing it at some point soonish I think

But.... hehehe.... good idea. But I need to get my secondary up and running. I'm eventually gonna buy either some parts or the whole PC (i7 4790K, 980, etc) from @Dreaper, so that will become my secondary. But for now I have a sandy bridge i5 and will possibly purchase a GTX 950 for that.

The easiest solution, no headache in fixing it, is to make a new account, set as admin, login, see if all works fine, if it does, simply transfer your stuff over it, and delete the broken account.

 

Recommendation, if you do this, while logged in to the new account, Windows is still creating the account, updating and downloading apps. I strongly recommend to wait for it to be done before starting anything. You'll nice that you'll see no more Down Arrow tile in the Start menu anywhere, and if you do: Store > Profile account next to the search box > Download & updates > "Check for updates", you should have no more updates showing up. If the Store is update, things moved. You need to do, instead: Store > "..." > Download & updates > "Get updates".

 

Once all done, restart, NOW you can transfer your stuff, remove the apps you don't want (or unpin the shortcuts to apps to be installed if they are just shortcuts to the Store), setup your account and stuff. Once everything is up and running, and you are sure you don't need anything from the old account, you can delete the old account.

open the Windows File Explorer and navigate to the following location: “C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0.”

Right-click “powershell.exe,” then click “Run as administrator.”

 

After opening the PowerShell, copy the below code snippet and execute it.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
