Ryzen 7 1700 worth it?

Hi, right now im planning on getting a ryzen 5 1600 and im wondering if its worth it to just get the ryzen 7 1700.

Mainly going to use this pc for gaming 1080p ultra or high settings.

Also wondering if the ryzen 7 1700 is going to last me longer than ryzen 5 1600 before it starts slowing down or something later on.

Thanks!

For 1080p gaming you will see little to no difference. If you planned on doing more productivity based stuff like adobe, graphic design, etc. might make sense to get a 1700. But if your going to be doing 1080p gaming getting a Ryzen 5 right now is a good value. Also remember that Ryzen 2 is supposed to be coming out around February, so if you get a 1600, there might be a upgrade option as early as 6 months down the road. Food for thought.

A CPU should never just "slow down", but at that there is no real reason to have more than a 6 core CPU, especially just for gaming. Games rarely use more than 4 cores, and even with streaming a 6/12 CPU should be fine

Their clock speeds are almost the same, but the 1600 will have a lower power consumption and lower heat output, along with a lower cost so that's what I would recommend.

no, pretty sure no games are effectively using more than the 12 threads the 1600 has, if intel and amd continue to increase the core count it might make a difference in like... 8 years

Technically it's just a refresh, but I don't know how far AMD will take it. I think it's going down to 12 nm from 14 nm, so there might be some significant clock speed changes, or they could just leave it at lower power consumption. No way to tell until it happens.

But six months is a long time to wait for a piece of tech that may or may not be a big upgrade. If you keep telling yourself "just wait six more months" you could theoretically do that forever because that's how the tech industry works.

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

CPU: Intel i7 8700K @4.9 GHz/1.315v

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A

Right which is why I am saying to him/her just get a 1600 for now.

Get R5 1600 and decent X370 mobo that will last you until AM4 dies.

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

Even if you get a 1700 now - and in 6 months - sell it to upgrade or whatever - there's still not THAT much value lost. IMO

AMD's claim that they plan to support AM4 till 2020 was one of the main reasons why I decided to give them a chance.
