Where do I have to buy a phone from

So me and a friend are going to buy iPhone 8's. He has Verizon and I have TMobile. 

 

Can we just go to an Apple store? Or do we need to go to our carrier store? I just want an unlocked one if you can get that at a store. We'll both pay in full for just the phone. No contract or anything if it's possible. 

 

I've only got phones online in the past so im not sure how it works.

Carrier, Apple, online, any Apple Authorized retailer. 

 

If you want unlocked you might have to go to Apple or order online.

If you have a best buy, you can get on from there I believe they have unlocked phones, don't know if they have the Iphone 8 Though

Buy directly from Apple and go to your carrier for a SIM card.

Ended up ordering it online to be shipped to my house from Apple. All the ones in store where silver or gold so couldn't do in store pick up.

 

Now for my friend he has Verizon. How does active his phone? Call version (he's not the plan owner) or go into a Verizon store?
