Is now the right time to invest in a high end PC for VR? Or will a new generation of products come out soon?

Cacao

I'm thinking of spending about €1,500 - 2,000 on a nice PC with a VR setup.

However with the GTX 1080 having come out in May 2016 and the HTC Vive having come out in April 2016, I can't help but feel like I would be investing considerable money on somewhat outdated hardware.

I don't know if I should buy now and risk a new generation of GPUs (Volta) and VR headsets (Vive 2) coming out in a month or two. Or if I should hold on and risk waiting 6 - 12months when I could've been having tonnes of fun in the mean time.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

You should wait for the CPU (coffee lake), but not the GPU. Nvidia has delayed Volta and Vega is still new from AMD. I dont know about VR stuff though.

Get something from the 10 series by Nvidia, best GPUs to buy right now. As for the CPU, wait for Coffee Lake, only a few weeks away IIRC.

If you can, I would wait if I were you. GPU and memory prizes are absolutely bonkers at the moment. It probably won't get better before the end of the year, but if you can wait 6-12 months I'd stick with the i7 and sli Titans for a bit (that really shouldn't be much of a burden).

Well GPU prices are bonkers in some places for some cards, the 1080 and 1080 ti are not outrageous, and memory is only overpriced compared to the really low prices we all got used to. Historically the memory prices are actually fairly good (going back into the '80's and '90's for comparison). It's just that since about 2000 until the last 8 months there was a glut of memory production so we got used to cheap memory, and well demand had caught up to production.

As for the OP question, I would wait for Coffee lake (5th of Oct release date) to see how it compares to the R7 but sometime in the next couple of months would not be a bad time to jump on a VR ready PC and maybe VR if you are interested.
