Short GPU for Q6600

nootnoot1277

Got my lan rig together for MC n some other not overly demanding games running:
Base: A complete Dell E520 i bought for $20 (AUD)

Upgrades:
A Q6660 (free)

80+ bronze 400w psu (got in exchange for building a friends pc)

6gb of ddr2 @ 800mhz (already had it)

1tb WD blue @7200rom ($65 new)

so all up cost me $85 for this awesome little Dell that's nice n strong being a steel case which is great for LAN parties but now i need a GPU for it and the only one i have that will fit is a GTX 550ti and its awful.

I was looking at a used Gainward GTX 650 for $40 (AUD) as it needs to be a short GPU since being a BTX case a long GPU cooler will hit the big ol dell copper heatsink (used to have a pentium D in it) but if anyone has any suggestions for older gpu's that are a max of 16cm ish in cooler length (the pcb can be longer since it will clear like my watercooled GTX 480 used to but that's another story. anyway old GPU's short relativily cheap these days give me some ideas.
cheers guys

1050 has a short version, iirc.

Low to mid tier cards mostly have short versions. Does it need to be low profile (half height) though?

If it only needs to be half length then I'll go for a GTX 960 at most. Other available options are the 1050ti, 950 (90w version), 1050 and 950 (75w version), arranged in decreasing order in power draw. The 950 90w and 960 will need a 6pin (some 960 even need an 8 pin).

What is the mobo though? There's a big difference because some mobo overclock well while some cant oc at all.

A 1050 is about as far as you can go without totally starving the GPU of action. Something like this would do the trick. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/G3H48d/zotac-geforce-gtx-1050-2gb-mini-video-card-zt-p10500a-10l

doesnt need to be low profile its a Dell E520 their a Mbtx tower with a full size width.

i was originally thinking 1050 howver the problem is the ol Q6600 will admittedly bottleneck it a fair bit i think thats why i was thinking an older card of the same tier.

GTX 750ti

well i can pick a 750ti up for $80 possibly $60 if i can get him down on his price but is its performance really worth being double the price of the 650 non ti especially when paired with a Q6600

For 60$ it is worth it for sure a GTX 750ti is pretty much a GTX 1050 but much cheaper xD

Also if there would be any bottleneck with the GTX 1050, it won't be there with the GTX 750ti

so i just thought i'd give you an update. my local store had a clearance sale on the MSI variant of the GTX 750ti for $90 (AUD) and i gotta say its an awesome card i love it its perfect for this Dell. its such a good pair with the Q6600 playing Doom on medium-high settings always keeping above 30fps mostly hovering around 50. so thanks for all your help.
