I'm planning to get a gaming pc next year around early-mid 2018. I plan to use it as my gaming machine mainly since I already have a laptop that I use as my "workstation."  Some of the games I plan to play include Space Engineers, Monster Hunter World, Planetside 2, WarFrame, Destiny 2, Dark Souls, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Witcher, and a few more at medium to high settings at around 40-50 fps. (though I perfer nintendo games mainly)  Do you guys think this is a good build for under $700? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CFxz4C (keeping in mind I'm getting windows 10 from Kinguin)

Don't get an i5. Get a Ryzen 5 1600 with a B350 board, it's better :D

Coffeelake will be out by then and I'm sure whispers of Volta will be about by then. No reason to bother putting a list up now, just save up the money and ask again when you plan on putting the rig together within a month

to be fair, the Coffee lake 6 cores will be much higher pricies then the Ryzen ones, plus most of them wont have hyperthreading.

No. Rumored pricing put the coffelake series right around where Kabylake started. That's would mean about $250 for the unlocked I5 at launch and dropping to around 220-230 in the coming months.

That would mean you'd get a six-core for slightly more (<$20) that has substantially higher IPC (~20% over Ryzen if rumors are to be believed) and ought to be able to OC to ~5ghz since coffee is a further refinement of the 14nm process.

Thats out of his price range. i5 < Ryzen 5 in terms of computer performance. Gaming wise yes intel will beat it. But you have to keep in mind, Intel does not care what AMD does, they will price their products according to what they think will sell. Sure when ryzen launched prices got reshuffled a bit, but you have to keep in mind hes not getting a z370 Board new for less then $140, thats WAY out of his budget at that point.

All I really plan to do is game and media consumption (youtube, social media etc). I don't plan to do crazy things like stream or video editing

Then go Ryzen. It's better than the current Kaby Lake i5s at gaming, having 200 chrome tabs, streaming and video editing.

Don't waste your money on a Ryzen if you're only gaming. You'll get around 10 fps less on avg, not to mention you'll be forced to buy a more expensive MB and RAM.

Only get a Ryzen if you plan on doing some editing or something.

No, according to benchmarks you linked and I linked last night, they all say the R5 1600 gets about 1-4 FPS less averages, and 1-3 FPS higher lows.

Not sure where you're getting more expensive mobo, b350 is cheaper than z270 and a320 is cheaper than b250. And as for ram, you're not FORCED to, Plus faster ram usually isn't that much more.

Did you read the quote? Before you respond saying "Why do this? you can do this etc" Please read the quote. Guy i quoted said he could easily OC it to 5 ghz, you cannot do that on the other boards. Plus the i5's Still are not cost effective because they lack threads, so you are still limited on tasks (most should still be fine).

And for you people saying it gets 10 fps less, thats compared to the i7 7700k, and that thing is just a beast, but its also a lot more then what hes looking to get. The more budget oriented Cpu's are not suppose to compete with that, and hes not looking for best performance available, hes looking for the best value for his money.

6 cores 12 threads > 6 cores 6 threads in most day to day tasks and programs that properly utilize the cores.  if you ever do video editing or anything like that. Gaming yes Intel will beat AMD with the newer i5's, but it really comes down to pricing.

The most I'll realistically being using the rig is for at most is playing a game, a video in the background and maybe a couple other tabs.

(If anyone can say, is a mechanical keyboard really better than a membrane, I've used a membrane keyboard and it's worked well-ish considering I've used a mechanical one before as well.)

100% Mechanical is Better imo, its much more comfortable to type on, and depending on the switch and sounds you like, you can really fine tune it to perfection. Some of these quick and speed type cherry switches look amazing :D
