GTX 770 Re-review in 2017

AlTech

A long time ago, almost 2-3 years ago I think, I reviewed the GTX 770. It wasn't the most amazing review ever by any stretch of the imagination and I recently re-reviewed it in a video format. I realize some people prefer written reviews to videos and so I've decided to make a written version.

Context:

I've owned a GTX 770 from End of May 2014 and still own it as of me writing this.

I planned on buying a new GPU but the miners have been buying the GPUs I wanted to buy.

And I wanted to check out performance in 2017 so I ran a bunch of benchmarks and I'll give my thoughts on this.

Introduction:

So, you may be asking why I'm making a post about the GTX 770 in 2017. Other than the fact that I do not have a new GPU to test, a lot of people have been buying used GK104 based GPUs for their rigs due to other GPUs (such as RX 570s and RX 580s) being too expensive because of the mining craze. I want to inform prospective buyers of used GK104 based GPUs what kind of performance they can expect in 2017.

Framerate was captured using Fraps 3.5.99 . MSI Afterburner and RTSS was used for monitoring information whilst running benchmarks. In some cases, benchmark tests were recorded using OBS Studio and Nvidia's NVENC encoder. This is a lightweight encoder which causes minimal loss in framerate (maybe between 5-10%).

FRAFS (Not Fraps) was used to get the 0,1% and 1% lows,

OS: Windows 10 Build 15063 X64

CPU: Intel core i5-4570

GPU: MSI Twin Frozr 4 GTX 770 2GB

RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600

Drivers used; Nvidia 382.05 drivers since anything newer causes multi-monitor issues.

Performance results:

So, you can obviously see that it can run at 60fps on many games. Maybe not necessarily at High settings but it can still do the job for 1080p Medium Settings.

But who should but this graphics card in 2017? Somebody with a Fermi GPU e.g. GTX 500 or GTX 400 series or older. Somebody with a pre GCN GPU on the AMD side could buy this.

How much should you buy one for? Probably around 100 USD max.

Already own one and want to sell it? It could probably sell for between 80-100 USD.

Should you buy one if you have a GPU which is newer than Kepler or GCN? Absolutely not. That would be almost as bad as buying a 580 for anything over $300 USD.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

wow, that's a lot of benchmarks :D

Do you still have the results from your previous review (assuming you did some of the same games back then)?  If so, would be interesting to take note of any changes.

I don't know if I'd be able to find it.

I think performance in BF4 Multiplayer has improved quite a bit. Other than that, I don't think much has changed.

Interestingly, I could have sworn that I've gotten a performance regression in CS:GO (I didn't test CS:GO officially but I've noticed framerate when playing).

Are those Firestrike results overall or GPU score? Also what clocks were sustained through the run?

Overall I think.

My guess is it's similar to a 1050... now we wait to see if I'm right :P

I actually sold my 770 to a collector of older graphics cards for about $230. I didn't really game much on it and he was surprised when I told him I upgraded to a 970, lol.

Nice review m8! :)

I also bought this card last year Cuz it was a steal at just 100€. Using it in my GF's PC to basically only play CSGO @1080p144

It's still a great card for that resolution!
