144hz then get a second monitor later on preferably IPS or higher resolution monitor

Depends on the usecase. If you value gaming more get the 144hz, but if you do a lot of work that needs lots of work space then 3 monitors will be better. I have a 144 hz 1440p monitor as main monitor and a second 1080p monitor as second. 144hz gives lots of benefits for gaming if you have hardware to run games on that fps. And the second monitor doesn't need to be anything special if you decide you need some more desktop space to work with

I have 3 monitors, and while I love it when I edit videos, playing games on it is hit or miss. There are only a few games that I have that both work properly with all 3 and actually have a benefit to using it. The thing with the tipple setup is that you can watch videos and what not while you play a game.

 

Get a 144Hz Freesync/Gsync monitor. Just getting a 144Hz monitor isn't always a the best, especially in more demanding games.

For productivity or flight simulators, get the three. For just gaming, particularly competitive FPS games, get the 144Hz.

Do like me and get a 144-165hz IPS main panel and then 2x 60hz IPS side panels. That way you can game on your main screen and use the others for productivity. And whatever games you can run on all 3, won't pass 60fps most likely so the 60hz limit is fine. 

 

Afterall 3x 2560x1440 is hard to run even by today's GPU standards.

Prefer my 3 1080's over my 1440 any day. Better for everything. I only play fps games. Even if I put them at 60hz the benefits would be worth it. 

But it really depends on what you need/want.
