Will my GPU'S still run at 16x with an m.2 ssd installed

Hi guys,

 

Had a raid 0 set-up on two 1TB ssd's that failed because one drive somehow disassociated itself with the other drive and couldn't get them to collaborate like youtubers seem to be doing nowadays. (E N G L A N D I S M Y C I T Y)

 

Anyway I have a i7-5930k on an Asus X99 Deluxe motherboard with 2 1080Ti's in SLI and, would adding an m.2 ssd mess with the dual x16 lanes that the gpu's get?

 

UPDATE:

 

Got the drive and installed it, M.2 ssd running at x4 and both gpu's running at 16x

 

 

 

 

Asus's Vertical mount is so peculiar imo

It will go through the lanes provided by the chipset. It will not affect the GPUs. This is assuming it's an NVMe SSD. If it's SATA, it won't use PCIe lanes.

No, it should go though the chipset (8x is plenty for a GPU anyway).

Yes, it has an M.2 slot.

Hmmm. Well i purchased a samsung 960 pro m.2 ssd and am just wondering if it will run at its advertised speeds or near about that on my board

just watch out, some of these M.2 slots only are wired for two PCIe slots. My Gigabyte X99 SLI motherboard was like that. So I had to buy a PCIe to M.2 Riser card like this to utilize the SSDs full bandwidth.

ex: on my evga motherboard depending on what slots you occupy it will make other slots use less pcie lanes even if you have enough on the cpu. if I move my pcie ssd from under my gpus and sandwhich it between them, my motherboard will automatically reduce the gpus to x8 each, even though i have a 40 lane cpu. check your motherboard manual, you should be fine, just give it a try see what happens.

There's a bit of incorrect info here. People are saying the pcie lanes will go through the chipset, this is incorrect because the m.2 slot and pcie card that adapts to an m.2 slot are both pcie gen3, but the chipset uses gen 2 lanes which means the lanes have to go through the CPU.

 

Regardless you're fine though, 2 x16 GPUs+2 x4 pcie SSDs is still 40 lanes, which is exactly what your CPU supports.

 

And even if there's something else on the mobo that uses up CPU pcie lanes it shouldn't even matter if your GPUs go to x8. The performance drop from x16 to x8 is 0-1% (aka within margin of error). So there are absolutely no worries to be had.

 

Before you get the SSDs though, what are they going to be used for? If it's just os and apps/games, I suggest you get a larger sata ssd. NVMe SSDs aren't any better than decent sata ones for boot times and app launch times, they're only useful for prosumers.

m.2 is a form factor. There are both pcie and sata m.2's.

Appreciate the info and help here. I was using two 1tb sata ssd's in raid but then the sata controller ended up resetting one of the drives and essentially destroyed the array. I now very much hate on-board sata controllers and have lost all faith in them. Anyway i want to try an m.2 drive considering I've been using sata forever

Be careful... M.2 =/= NVME... Some M.2 slots can only do SATA so no PCIe drive support. Just because a mobo has an M.2 does not mean it can do PCIe.
