1070 or 1080

Hi everyone,

 

I am building a new PC and I only need to buy a GPU so my question is; which GPU should I buy? I am considering an Asus Strix Gtx 1070/1080 but I'm not sure if a 1080 will be overkill and if it will effect my gaming performances. Also it costs around 40$ more and you get a nice boost is performance. My specs are:

 

Motherboard: Asus Strix b250f

CPU: Intel i5 7600

RAM: 16gb Gskill TridentZ

Storage: 1TB HDD + 500gb SSD

PSU: 450W EVGA

 

Can anyone tell me if going with a 1080 is smart or not, I don't really know. The types of games I am going to play are: Battlefield 1, Rainbow Six: Siege, Rocket League, Fallout 4.

If the 1080 costs only 40$ more than the 1070 it doesnt even matter if it's overkill or not imo. Just get the 1080 in such a case because the 1070 ir clearly overpriced then and you will have a gpu for a longer time

For 40 dollars take the gtx 1080.

Furthermore maybe get ryzen 5 instead of i5 7600

Assuming he/she's not overclocking and it's an 80+ rated PSU, 450W should be fine to run everything he's got. Pascal and Kaby Lake are super frugal on the power draw.

Then trade that i5 for an i7 7700 or wait Coffee Lake i7 8700 you don't want to grab a GTX 1080 only to see it be bottlenecked by an i5

upgrade soon since the i5 severely bottlenecks the 1080 and the 1070 so you won't see much better than the GTX 1060 6GB

Then you should go with the GTX 1070 as a 1080 will be pointlessly bottlenecked meanwhile you can't play at 144hz using the i5 so maybe consider a in-between LG 29UM68-P (2560x1080p at 80hz) it should be the best display for a GTX 1070 (or VEGA 56 since FreeSync).

Okay, if I buy the i7 7700k and don't overclock it, will the 1080 be a good buy or nah?

Im using a 1070 on a 1440p 144 monitor and its pretty good. But the prices are ridiculous, your better off getting a 1080.

Yeah but your i7 4790k sweeps the floor with a locked i5 7600

yes but if you don't have a z series motherboard just get a normal 7700
